' BANWELL IN SEVENTH HEAVEN'
RESULT: BANWELL 7 V WESTON ST JOHNS 0
Banwell finished their league campaign travelling to Weston St Johns on Tuesday night, knowing that a resounding victory would give them a mathematical chance of promotion if results went their way regarding Portishead and Creech St Michael.
In yet again what was a change of formation and personnel to arranged due to a couple of late withdrawals Banwell lined up with ever present Harvey in goal, they elected to play 3 at the back with Pennington and Dan Grubb flanking Mullins in the heart of the defence, McKeever was wide right with Damo Hill on the left, leaving Duncan and James in the centre of the park, King, Bradley and Dayle Grubb formed a 3-man attack and it paid dividends within minutes Banwell found themselves 2-0 up after great work from Hill on the left his crosses fell to King and Bradley who made no mistake as they were found unmarked in the area and Banwells target of 8 goals was off the mark in emphatic style.
St Johns were rattled and Banwell took total control of the game, it was continued pressure and after great work from McKeever on the other flank, his cross field pass found Bradley on the penalty spot and he cooly finished to give Banwell a 3-0 cushion after only 15 minutes. Bradley was enjoying his attacking reign after occupying full back for the majority of the season and duly got his hatrick after great work from Dayle Grubb and Mike James sent him through and Banwell went further ahead after Dayle Grubb was brought down after a mazy run, he picked himself up, dusted down and dispatched the spot kick to make it 5-0.
St Johns were trying to fill the holes that Hill, King, Grubb, McKeever and Bradley were maing but to no avail, Grubb picked up his 2nd goal and Banwells 6th just before the break as he glided past 3 defenders and slotted past the keeper with ease to send Banwell into half time 6-0 to the good and on schedule.
Banwell came out in the 2nd half looking to continue their excellent form of the 1st 45 minutes but St Johns looked a different side and were creating more chances for their lively strikers but Pennington, Mullins and Grubb were in fine shape and coped accordingly in an unfamiliar back line with Harvey making a couple of good saves to keep Banwells clean sheet preserved.
Bradley scored his 4th after great work from King on the right his perfect cross was met by Bradleys powerful header from 12 yards which flew past the keeper and nestled in the top corner putting Banwell 7-0 ahead with 15 minutes to go. McKeever was showing signs of tiredness and fatigue and was replaced by the lightning sharp Italian Del Viero, Banwell were not playing like they had for the majority of the game and free flowing football was being snubbed out by the hard working St Johns playing for pride, as Banwell strived for the 8th goal of the game they couldnt find the breakthrough as 2 great free kicks from Grubb were well saved by St Johns athletic keeper.
Great performances from Mullins, Pennington, Hill, and Grubb but the SWR Electrotech and Fairsave Man of the Match award had to go to Captain Chris Bradley for his tirelsss diaplay of running, 4 great goals and a faultless display of finishing. Other mentions to James who slotted in well in the middle of the park, McKeever was always willing on the right and King coming back to his best in an unusual strikers position.
Banwell ran out comfortable 7-0 victors in what they thought would be a tight encounter, this may give them a chance of getting promoted, depending on Saturdays result between Portishead and Creech St Michael and Creech's final game with Clevedon.
Banwell will finish in the top 4, which at the start of the season was their goal, so a good season which will come to a finale with their Cup Final on Tuesday 13th May v Larkhall Athletic @ Bishop Sutton FC 7.30 Kick Off. There is a 52 seater coach being layed on by the club for supporters, club memebers, families etc which will leave the Banwell Village Car Park on the main road opposite the school at approx 5.30pm, to reserve your seat please speak to Brad Diver asap on 07709 768843.
We look forward to seeing you all there supporting the team...
' BANWELL LOSE PROMOTION BATTLE'
RESULT: BANWELL 1 V PORTISHEAD 3
Banwell played hosts to local rivals Portishead at the Riverside, both sides knowing that a win could claim 2nd in the league and automatic promotion to Div 1.
Banwell were forced into several changes with no fewer than 7 regulars missing, Ferris, Price, Lilwall, Pugh-Jones, Rouvrais, Brooker and Sweeting. They lined up with Harvey, Bradley slotted back in to his new found position of right back, Dan Grubb left back, leaving skipper Mullins and Fletcher the central pairing at the back. King was wide left, McKeever on the right, Dayle Grubb and Duncan were holding the middle of the park with Andy Hayes sat just in front, supporting Pennington alone up front. Capille, Diver and James were on the bench.
Banwell started slowly and within 50 seconds they gave Portishead a free kick just over the halfway line, the ball was played in and flicked on by their striker whos header found the feet of his unmarked strike partner, and he duly put Portishead 1-0 up leaving Banwell shell shocked. This seemed to wake Banwell up initially but there usual passing game was missing on a difficult pitch and wintery conditions were casuing them problems. Portishead had their tails up and Banwell looked uncomfortable for the first 20 minutes. Mullins, Fletcher, Bradley and Grubb were holding firm against the onslaught.
Banwell found their feet and raised the tempo throughout the remainder of the 1st half and were extremely unlucky not to find themselves in front after great work from Dayle Grubb who glided past 3 players cut the ball back to Mckeever whose shot was some how saved by the keeper who was going the other way but his hand appaeared from knowhere and the rebound was blocked on the line. Shortly after more pressure from Grubb made the keeper mikick his clearance and he charged it down, the ball was spinning towardas the goalline with Pennington looking favourite to slide it home, a Portishead defender stretched out a leg and toed it just wide to foil Pennington. Banwell could of gone into the break 2-1 up, but as it was Portishead rode the storm and went in 1-0 to the good.
Banwell came out looking for a quick response to get back in the game but were dealt a hammer blow as after just 26 seconds Portishead were 2-0 ahead and cruising.
Changes were made as King was replaced by Capille and shortly after Fletcher was replaced by James, Banwell reverted to a 3-4-3 approach and were starting to create chances.
Capilles fresh legs were causing Portisheads rearguard problems, it was his mazy run that got him up ended in the box and rewarded Banwell with a penalty and Dayle Grubb made no mistake from the spot, getting Banwell back in the game. Another Pennington chance flew just over and a Hayes shot was well saved by the Portishead custodian who was having a blinder between the sticks.
Portishead hit Banwell on the break as the home side were pushing men forward to try and get an equaliser knowing that they had to get something from the game, this left the back a little open and Portishead played a few long balls to try and get in behind the 3 man defence, it worked as they were also awarded a penalty which they duly converted sending them 3-1 ahead with only 5 minutes remaining.
It was a fair result come the final whistle and Portishead were deserved winners of this important game, they got their revenge of a 4-0 drubbing earlier on in the season and look like they could grab 2nd as Creech St Michael lost to Clevedon leaving the door a jar.
In what was an indifferent display from Banwell there were good performances from Harvey who made a couple of inspired saves, Mullins who was a rock at the back ably supported by the return of Fletcher who slotted in well. Dayle Grubb came more into the game 2nd half and turned in a good effort as did Pennington who didnt stop running and chasing lost causes. James and Capille performed well when they were thrown in and didnt look out of place but the Fairsave & SWR Electrotech Man of the Match award went to Stu McKeever who was in sizzling form all afternoon down the right, if only all the Banwell players had put this much effort in it could well of been a different outcome.
Banwell will end their league season on Tuesday night 22nd April 6.30ko v Weston St Johns knowing a win would probably secure them 3rd spot in the league, a great performance considering a top 5 spot was the target.
They will finish their season in the Cup Final on Tuesday 13th May v Larkhall Athletic @ Bishop Sutton FC 7.30 Kick Off. There will be a 52 seater coach layed on by the club which will leave the Banwell Car Park on the main road opposite the school at approx 5.30pm, to reserve your seat please speak to Brad Diver asap on 07709 768843.
' BANWELL BEAT WELLS CITY TO REACH CUP FINAL '
RESULT: BANWELL 2 V WELLS CITY 1
Banwell played hosts to Div 2 East side Wells City in the Semi Final of the Div 2 Cup at the Riverside, with a 70 strong crowd cheering on the home side, it was a hostile atmosphere for the visitors.
Banwell were forced to re-shuffle their side with no fewer than 7 regulars missing, Ferris, Price, Bradley, Brooker, Sweeting and the Mitchell Brothers. Harvey ever present was in goal, Lilwall pulled in at right back with Grubb left back, leaving skipper Mullins and Rouvrais the central pairing at the back. King was wide left, Hayes on the right, Pugh- Jones and Duncan were holding the middle of the park with Dayle Grubb pulling the strings just in front, ably supporting Pennington up front. Capille, Diver and James were on the bench.
With the wind blowing and the pitch still producing the odd bobble it was Banwell who came out of the blocks quickest, a free kick from young Grubb wide on the right hand side of the box found the head of King whose effort rebounded off the bar to Pennington whose drive was blocked by the keeper and in due course fell to French import Rouvrais who unleashed a right foot volley into the top corner from 6 yards out to put Banwell in front after only 5 minutes gone.
Wells looked shell shocked from the early pressure Banwell created and were starting to show nerves as Banwell stepped up throught the gears with Hayes and King tormenting their markers on the flanks allowing Grubb the free role he relishes so much and it was on the 30 minute mark when a short free kick from Duncan found Grubb again on the right, he glided past his man with consumate ease and pulled the ball back perfect for Rouvrais who missed it completely but it fell to Mullins who slotted home with his right boot to give Banwell a cushion at 2-0 going into the break.
Banwell went into the half time break on a high but knew the 2nd half was going to be harder with the strong wind in their faces and Wells' long ball game trying to unlock the back line. The first 15-20 minutes of the 2nd half was fairly even in terms of possesion but Wells were pushing hard to get back into the game and Banwell were finding it hard to clear their lines as the wind got even stronger as the half went on.
King was unfortunate to pick up an injury and Capille replaced him and went on to the right flank with Hayes switching to the left, Hayes was enjoying the atmosphere and he started to run the game with mazy runs and creating chances with his pace and flair. Wells then had 5 minutes of pressure and were rewarded with a direct free kick 25 yards out, somehow it found its way throught the legs of Rouvrais and Harvey was well beaten, Wells were back in the game at 2-1 with 20 minutes left on the clock.
Pennington was put through shortly after a great diagonal run from Hayes yet again, but his effort was well saved by the Wells custodian. Grubb then made a chance for Hayes as the keeper approached him he tried an audacious lob from 20 yards which just went past the right upright and Banwell were looking comfortable again after a mini fightback.
The whistle blew and Banwell were well deserved 2-1 winners, excellent performance by the whole team in general with special mention to the whole of the back line who were solid for the whole game and could do nothing about the free kick which was well executed. Pugh Jones and Duncan were superb in tandem in the middle of the park allowing young Grubb to dictate with his old head on such young shoulders showing yet again what a precocious talent he is. Pennington ran his heart out up front chasing everything and caused the Wells rearguard problems with his height and hassle factor, but the Man of the Match Award went to Andy Hayes, he was in superb fettle throughout, made endless runs, toying with his rivals all afternoon and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet, and it was a faultless display.
Banwell will now play Larkhall Athletic in the Cup Final on Tuesday 13th May at Bishop Sutton FC, kick off at 7.30. There will be a coach organised for players, supporters, family etc which will be finalised over the next couple of weeks, it will be great if we can get as many of us together to support in what should be a memorable night.
Banwell are also still in the hunt for promotion to Division 1, and lock horns with local rivals Portishead this Saturday, again at the Riverside, kick off at 3pm. They need to win their last 2 games to be in with a chance of gaining 2nd spot which would send them in to a play-off final with 2nd place from Div 2 East.
' 5 STAR BANWELL RUN RIOT AT WRINGTON REDHILL'
RESULT: WRINGTON REDHILL 0 V BANWELL 5
Banwell returned to league action on Saturday after a week off, and they were in rude health ahead of the short trip to Wrington who are struggling at the other end of the table, although at home back in November it required 2 late goals from the Italian protege Del-Viero to secure a 3-2 victory.
Banwell needed to win and increase their goals tally in order to stand a better chance of promotion, as it could yet go down to goal difference.
They started the stronger of the 2 sides from the outset, stringing passes together and dominating the best part of the game. Dan Grubb returned to the side after work commitments and slotted in like he hadnt been away at left back, ably supported by the ever relaible pair of Mullins and French recruit Rouvrais im the centre with skipper Bradley filling in again at right back. King was wide left with McKeever on the right, allowing Duncan and Lilwall to control the middle of the park, up front it was Ferris and Pennington. Gerbille, Mitchell, and Del Viero were warming the bench with anticipation.
It wasnt long before Banwell moved through the gears and it was live-wire Ferris who collected a great ball from Grubb wide on the left hand side, he cut in past his man superbly and from the corner of the box whipped a right foot curler straight into the far top corner leaving the keeper standing, it could of been so many more shortly after, Pennington guilty of missing 2 great chances, Lilwall hitting a thunderbolt volley from 25 yards bound for the top corner only for it to be somehow headed off the line and over, Bradley had a good shot well saved and Rouvrais also went close with a powerful header from yet another Ferris corner.
Bradley made up for his miss shortly after though, great work from the dynamic Lilwall and Irish bred McKeever who found Bradley flying from right back who unleashed a right foot drive into the bottom corner and Banwell were 2-0 up going into the break.
Pennington was suffering with growing pains, and was replaced on 55 minutes by the enigmatic Darrell Gerbille who was straight into the action and immediately caused Wringtons slow defence problems with his pace and skills, King was having a stormer but was unfortunate he had to come off for a freak injury to his calf from a throw in, Mitchell replaced King wide left and again was involved straight away and created Ferris's 2nd goal of the game, and Banwells third as he latched onto a great through ball and cooly slotted past the helpless Wrington keeper. Banwell were now in cruise control, McKeever was out of puff and replaced by the lightning sharp Italian Del Viero, it was Ferris the playmaker as his cross was perfect for the giant Frenchmen Rouvrais who towered above everyone and headed Banwell 4-0 ahead.
Harvey was forced into action for about 5 minutes of the 2nd half, and he pulled off 3 great saves in succession to deny Wrington a consolation goal, but praise must also go to the reassured back line of Grubb, Bradley, Mullins and Rouvrais who were in fine fettle all game.
Ferris went on to secure his 2nd hatrick of the season, and put Banwell 5-0 ahead with just minutes left. Banwell won this with plenty left in the tank and it was another win into whats turned into a thrilling finale to the season.
A great team performance here, the management duo of Diver and Duncan issued thier troops with at least a 5-0 win and the players duly delivered. Man of the match was a tough one and was shared between hatrick hero Ferris who was awesome all game, Lilwall for a superb display in the centre of the park and Skipper Bradley who was resolute and in the right place at the right time, a good trait to have in your locker. Other strong perfomances from McKeever, King, Mullins, Grubb, Rouvrais and Gerbille who looked dangerous when brought into the fold.
Banwells next game is against Wells City Reserves in the Semi Final of the Somerset Divisional Cup on Saturday 05th April at the Riverside Stadium, kicking off at 2.30.
Please put this in your diaries and support your local team, who are not only looking at a possible promotion to Division 1 but also a Cup Final!!
RESULT: BANWELL 1 V CHEDDAR 0
After a couple of weeks off due to the scheduling of the League fixtures, Banwell travelled the short distance to local rivals Cheddar in a 1/4 final cup clash at Bowdens Park.
With yet again a couple of injuries, holidays and work commitments Banwell fielded a balanced side, but by no means their strongest, Brooker filled in at left back for the unfortunate Price who broke his ankle the previous week training, Bradley slotted in at right back, and the dominant pairing of Mullins alongside the French import Rouvrais in the middle, with ever present Harvey in goal it was ominous for Cheddar. Duncan paired up with young star Dayle Grubb with King on the left and Hayes on the right, Pennington found himself along way up the pitch for a change, playing alongside Ferris in what was an unusual 4-4-2 formation. Irish bred Mckeever and the ever reliable Italian Del-Viero were on the bench.
Banwell started the better and dominated possesion in the opening 15-20 minutes, Pennington went close with a looping header from a Grubb corner and Ferris saw his shot well saved just after, as it headed for the top corner. Rouvrais saw a powerful header go wide and Brooker galavanting up from left back had a blast with his right boot go over the bar as Cheddar held firm and were thankful to their keeper who was keeping them in the game.
Hayes won a free-kick about 30 yards out and Brooker fancied his chances, he rifled a thunderbolt from his left boot and the keeper somehow saved with his legs as it flew through the wall, the rebound fell to Pennington whose effort was tipped round the upright by the Cheddar custodian yet again to deny Banwell the goal they definately deserved following strong pressure throughout the first 45 minutes. Late in the 2nd half Cheddar picked up the tempo and had a couple of half chances which were woefully missed by the Cheddar number 9, but they did carve Banwell open on a couple of occasions but to no avail.
Banwell were bouyed that they were playing the better football and it was only a matter of time before the breakthrough came their way, the 2nd half started in exactly the same vein of the 1st, Banwell were clearly the better footballing side, but to their credit Cheddar were battling hard and trying to resist the Banwell attacks, by now it was time for the Irish whippet McKeever to be introduced and King gave way after playing well. Within minutes of McKeever coming on at right midfield he was causing the Cheddar rearguard problems with his pace and runs from deep.
The breakthrough came on the 70 minute mark as a corner was whipped in by Grubb and headed back by the towering Rouvrais as the ball came out to McKeever his shot was blocked but the rebound fell to the feet at Ferris and he simply doesnt miss from there, he cooly fired in what was the winner and Cheddar seemed to out on their feet.
The final 15-20 minutes was controlled by Banwell who remained solid and the final whislte blew sending Banwell through to the Semi Finals. This was another vintage display from Banwell who were at times unplayable, Harvey was great in sweeping and claiming any crosses or corners that flew his way, Brooker in an unusual position of left back was inspirational and proved up to the test, Bradley was as always reliable and non stop at right back, with the big presence of Mullins and Rouvrais pairing up again in the middle it was a mean back line and they deserved the clean sheet for their troubleas.
Grubb at only 16 years of age is a precocious talent and ran the show in midfield, constantly causing problems with his attacking dribbling runs and through balls, ably supported by Duncan who despite his height proved a big winner in the aerial battles, Hayes was on the go all game and gave his marker the run around, King was impressive before being replaced by McKeever whose pace and movement proved to much for Cheddars defence, while Pennington and Ferris worked tirelessly for the cause up front, both could of scored a couple of goals but they played well together and Ferris notched his 11th of the season, now just 1 behind top scorer Brooker.
Man of the match wasnt easy to choose but for his continued improvement and immense maturity it was awarded to Dayle Grubb for a flawless display in the middle of the park, closely followed by Brooker, Duncan, Hayes and Mullins.
Banwell will now play Wells City Reserves in the Semi Final on 05th April at the Riverside, 2.30 kick off.
Please put this in your diaries and support your local team looking at a possible promotion to Division 1 and a Cup Final....watch this space.
RESULT: BANWELL 0 V COMBE ST NICHOLAS 4
After last weeks minor blip in only managing a draw with Berrow, Banwell knew they had to raise their game, not only in order to get their promotion bid back on track, but also to settle a score where they were robbed of 3 points away to the visitors back in December with a 94th minute penalty decision that never was.
Still reeling from endless players missing due to injury or work commitments, it got worse for Banwell after only 10 minutes when Russ Mitchell pulled his groin and Banwell were forced to re-shuffle with Duncan coming into the middle of the park and Bradley switching to right back. Combe St Nicholas were a strong and physical side and Banwell looked shell shocked as Rouvrais let his man run 1 on 1 with Harvey and Banwell soon found themselves hard up against it 1-0 down with only 15 mins played. Combe soon made it 2-0 after a throw in was allowed to bounce a couple of times into the box and Combes target man spun Pennington and dispatched his finish past the helpless Harvey.
It got worse for Banwell as Rouvrais went down in a heap shortly after and had twisted his ankle, Diver stripped off and took up his usual strikers role as Ferris dropped back into the hole and Banwell were forced into changing their formation to 3-5-2.
The next 20 minutes was mostly Banwell as they enjoyed plenty of ball and possesion as they looked to get back into a game which they had gifted their opponents an easy lead, Diver was linking the play well alongside Ferris and Hayes just behind him, with McKeever and King on the flanks looking to get past their men and deliver the crosses for the big man that is Diver to latch onto. Just as Banwell seemed to have found full flow a long ball eluded the back 3 of Pennington, Bradley and Price and Combes striker made no mistake from 12 yards out.
Banwell went into the interval 3-0 down and no subs left on the bench, it was going to take a monumental effort to get anything from the game now.
They came out fighting 2nd half with Lilwall and Duncan starting to get hold of the ball more in the middle of the park, supplying the silky Hayes and King who were not at the races 1st half but showed good attitude in raising their game for the 2nd period. Harvey pulled off a couple of great saves and the back 3 stood up well to the long ball attack of Combe, who were now man-marking Diver for some reason leaving Ferris and Hayes alot of space to run into. It was all Banwell for the best part of 30 minutes but they couldnt find a way past a well organised and no messing Combe defensive line.
Combe hit Banwell on the break again after a great ball from the left found a Combe shirt 6 yards out and his header was rifled in to confound Banwell to a 4-0 defeat as the final whistle ended a lacklustre Banwell performance and this may of ruined their chances of promotion after 2 weeks with only a return of 1 point, with 3 league games remaing they find themselves in 2nd place on 41 points as Langford leapfrogged above them with 43 points.
It was simply a game where too many influential players were missing at such an important time of the season, a couple of early injuries and re-shuffling to hinder, too many players were not up for it, and to give Combe some credit, a strong, physical, well organised side who not only wanted it more, but deserved it. However strong performances from the back 3 of Bradley, Pennington & Price along with Paul Lilwall who didnt stop all afternoon, Lilwall was duly named the SWR Electrotech / Fairsave Man of the Match award.
A dissapointing defeat at such a crucial time was not easy to take on the chin for Duncan and Diver, but with still a Cup Final opportunity in 2 weeks, along with the outside chance of promotion there is still alot to play for, especially for a side that was at the bottom of the table for the last couple of seasons, it has been a massive improvement and with just 3 games to go they will still look to continue their unprecendented progress till the end of the season.
Banwell now have 2 weeks rest until a Quarter-Final Cup fixture v Cheddar Reserves on the 08th March, 2.30pm kick off at Cheddar FC, all supporters welcome.
RESULT: BANWELL 1 V BERROW 1
Banwell travelled to Berrow to keep up their promotion push, with only 4 league games remaining and to stay at the top of the table.
Still missing Sweeting, Grubb, Pugh-Jones, Pennington and both the Mitchell brothers Banwell were still able to put out a strong side, Harvey, Price, Mullins, Rouvrais and Legg made up the back line, with Lilwall and Bradley central midfield with King just in front, Hayes and Brooker were the wide men and Ferris yet again up front. Banwell started the better on a pitch which although looked in good condition, was extremely bobbly and hard to pick a pass. Banwell had 2 good early chances from corners in which both fell to ex French centre back Rouvrais who headed the 1st just over the bar and 2nd straight into the arms of the keeper.
Banwell kept up the pressure with a few more good moves only for the final ball to go astray. Berrow were holding firm and soaking up the early pressure from the visitors and started to get more into the game after 15-20 minutes and they went close to breaking the deadlock on the half hour as a long ball was latched onto by the Berrow striker and his left foot 20 yarder flew past Harvey and hit the top of the bar, a let off for Banwell as long balls and pace from Berrow proved the dish of the day.
Berrow then took the lead after unusually slack marking from the back line and the same player that hit the bar ,ade no mistake with a glancing header from a well delivered free kick and Banwell found themselves 1-0 down at the break.
Strong words from the management duo of Duncan & Diver at half time looked to rally their troops in order to get back into the game early and push on for the winner after and they knew they had to pull their socks up and be counted or the promotion chase be prematurely drifting away.
Banwell looked a different side as the 2nd half got underway with Brooker, Ferris and King linking up well on the attacking front and the back line looked much more assured and in control with debutant Legg looking a decent signing alongisde Rouvrais, Mullins and Price who snuffed out any Berrow attacks with ease. Banwell got the equaliser on the 55 minute mark as Ferris lost his marker and his right foot effort found the bottom corner to get Banwell back in the game.
More chances were seen saved by the Berrow keeper and although Banwell pressed for the winner Berrow held firm and were defending as a unit with virtually all 11 men behind the ball making it difficult to penetrate or make the through ball. The game went into the last 10 minutes and Bradley had to retire due to cramp and was replaced by Duncan who slotted in as a straigh swap but it was too late as Berrow held out for a draw and denied Banwell the 3 points they so badly needed to keep the chasing pack at bay.
An indifferent performance by Banwell who seemed to pick up the pace 2nd half but were made to rue the chances they had missed 1st half and it was too little too late as they picked up a point in their championship race. Good performances by debutant Legg, Lilwall who put in alot of work alongside Bradley in the middle of the park, Brooker whose 2nd half was much better as was Ferris's, but it was keeper Harvey who performed heroics and was brave on a couple of instances who stole the SWR Electrotech and Fairsave Man of the Match award.
This week Banwell play hosts to Combe St Nicholas at the Riverside a 2.30 kick off, who snatched a point of Banwell in the reverse fixture with a dubious penatly decision in the 94th minute given by the Combe manager who stood in as the referee failed to show. This should be a feisty encounter.
RESULT: BANWELL 1 V YATTON 0
Banwell played hosts to Yatton at the Riverside after last weeks 3-1 loss against Creech St Michael, knowing that they had to win to stay top of the table, and couldnt afford to lose any more games on their run in to stand a chance of promotion to Division 1 of the Somerset Senior League.
Still missing 7 regulars, Pennington, Pugh-Jones, Sweeting, Hayes, Grubb, Bradley & Mitchell to either work commitments, injury or illness, Banwell managed to line up strong in defence with Russ Mitchell slotting in well at Right Back, Price on the other flank, with ex French international Rouvrais and the returning Mullins proving a hard line in front of ever present Harvey in goal. Brooker played in an unfamiliar role wide right with King on the left, which meant Lilwall, Duncan and debutant Ufendell patrolled the middle of the park with Ferris taking his usual slot up front on his own. Diver took his place on the bench again still recovering from injury, waiting for his re-call.
Banwell started the better on a pitch which had been cut up the previous week and was it hard to play the pretty, flowing football they are used to, instead it was a case of digging in, working hard and graft which was to prove decisive. The back line were not tested early on as they duly sniffed out any chances that may of appeared with consumate ease and it was going forward where Banwell looked so strong.
Brooker on the right was starting to run riot and his marker was in for a busy afternoon as he looked in fine fettle, whilst Lilwall who after a few games was now showing just what an asset he is, working alongside Duncan who donned his boots again in a good starting 20 minutes, with Ufendell linking up well with Ferris who was a live wire all afternoon.
The breakthrough nearly came on 24 minutes as Ufendell was played in by Brooker, but he was well tackled just inside the box as he looked to pull the trigger, Ferris had a flick volley well saved by Yattons keeper and then King saw an effort go just over in a good spell. Banwell kept pressing and superb skill from Brooker who glided past 3 men on the right and got to the byline before unleashing a pin point cross which was firmly met by Ferris's forehead and the keeper couldnt get near the bullet which found the net on the 35 minute mark. Banwell looked strong and determined as they went into the break 1-0 to the good and not troubled at the back.
Yatton came out with more aplomb in the 2nd half and looked to stifle Banwell with some long balls over the top but these were initially dealt with brilliantly by the towering Frenchman Rouvrais and Mullins who were in superb nick, Harvey was made to make 2 saves as Yatton pressed and pushed men forward to try and get back level, and had a guilt edge chance as anothe long ball this time caught out the back line which Yattons striker latched onto and from the edge of the box hit a great shot which flew past the oncoming Harvey but Banwell were saved as it rebounded of the cross bar and to safety.
Banwell were starting to give the ball away in bad areas and Yatton in fairness to them were starting to pressurise and looked certain to draw level with several attacks but the back line along with Lilwall and Duncan were dogged, and knew they had to suck it in and fight til the final whistle. Duncan pulled up with cramp due to lack of fitness, Diver replaced him with only a couple of minutes left to play and Banwell held out for an exciting 1-0 victory, which should of been put to bed in the 1st half.
In an excellent team effort where determination, concentration and pride shone through, there were great individual performances from the whole back line including Harvey, Lilwall was immense all game alongside Duncan in the middle, King and Brooker were tricky customers all afternoon, debutant Ufendell worked hard in his 1st game along with goal scorer Ferris who was awesome up front on his own.
Man of the Match sponsored by SWR Electrotech / Farisave was rewarded to the Team. Managers Man of the Match was awarded to Brooker who despite not scoring this week turned provider with what was described as 'a special run and cross' and was in superb form all game in which he simply tormented his opponents to submission.
This Saturday 09th February, Banwell travel to Berrow for another local derby which should be a good game and will look to stay top with another maximum 3 point haul.RESULT: BANWELL 2 V CONGRESBURY 0
Banwell made the short journey to Congresbury on a wet afternoon where the pitch was soaked after the morning showers, it was touch and go whether the game was going to be played, but after a referees inspection with the 2 captains it was deemed playable as Banwell were looking to make up for last weeks loss to fellow league contenders Langford.
They lined up with one of their most strongest squads, with Bradley again filling in at right back, debutant Rouvrais joined Pennington in the centre with Price on the left flank. Hayes and King were again the wide men, with Pugh-Jones, Dayle Grubb and Brooker playing central and Ferris as always up front. This left Mitchell, Duncan and Diver on the bench after Mullins was knocked down with flu earlier in the week.
Banwell started the better as the ball was skidding off the surface and was difficult to get hold of early on, but after a great run from Hayes which led to a corner Banwell took the lead as Grubb flighted his corner to Rouvrais who looked like slotting home before slipping over and the ball fell to Pennington whose legs got untangled and he cooly back heeled the ball past 2 Congresbury defenders on the line as Banwell got the perfect start within 5 minutes.
Brookers long throws and Grubbs precise corners were causing Congresburys keeper and back line all sorts of problems as the powerful Rouvrais and Pennington were easily finding space and flicking balls into the danger areas but the final touch was missing as Banwell went close with a Rouvrais header, Hayes and Grubb shot over from distance and King pulled a great save from Congresburys custodian.
At the back it was well patrolled by ever present Harvey in goal who looked assured in the difficult and wet conditions for a keeper, debutant Rouvrais was no-nonsense from the outset with powerful clearing headers and strong tackles his main attribute alongside Pennington who was in total control with Bradley and Price distributing well down the flanks for King & Hayes to run at the Congresbury full backs. It was pretty much one-way for the best part of 30 minutes until a chance fell to a Congresbury defender who somehow missed the ball completely with the goal at his mercy from 3 yards. Shortly after a header from the normally deadly Lush went just wide and Banwell were still in front.
It got better just before the interval as Brooker laid it off to Grubb who made 10 yards and a perfect timed ball disected the Congresbury back line and found Hayes who had cut in from the right and easily went round the keeper and finished from a tight angle to give Banwell a 2-0 lead at the break.
The second half was again dominated by Banwell attacking but good chances were misssed by Ferris, Grubb, Brooker, King and Hayes as Banwell looked to passs it into the net instead of hitting on sight. It was easy on the eye but as the pitch started to deteriate it was becoming harder and harder to get the ball out from under your feet and threw the mire. Mitchell replaced King with 25 to go and his fresh legs made a difference in the middle of the park and Banwell were in cruise mode as they made 3 or 4 good chances but couldnt find the finish to go further ahead. Price had a great 25 yard strike well saved and Grubb mishit his attempted lob but the game was won and Banwell were easy 2-0 winners.
Great perfomances from Harvey who made 2 great saves to keep Banwell in front, Pennington and French import Rouvrais were solid at the heart of the defence alongside full backs Price and Bradley who were both impressive, Pugh-Jones stuck to his guns with a willing effort, Grubb made a few chances and was unlucky not to add his tally of goals, Ferris worked tireleslly for the cause and Mitchell played effeciently when he came on.
Fairsave & SWR Electrotech Man of the Match went to ex Congresbury player Andy Hayes who terrorised his former club all afternoon and scored a great goal to seal victory & an inspired return to form.
This week Banwell host Portishead at the Riverside 2pm kick off. Portishead have only lost once all season - this being the reverse fixture at Portishead in October, where Banwell ran out 4-0 winners, please come down and support your local village team, who are now 4 points clear at the top of the league.RESULT: BANWELL 3 V LANGFORD ROVERS 4
Banwell travelled to local rivals Langford Rovers who sat in 2nd place, 4 points behind leaders Banwell before kick off as Banwell were looking to stretch that lead to 7 having played 2 games more.
Banwell were nearly back to full strength with ever present Harvey in goal, Price returning at left back, Bradley right back, Pennington and Mullins in the middle, with Hayes and King the wide men, Pugh Jones returned to patrol the midfield with young Grubb & Brooker the attacking midfielders with Ferris up front as usual. Disaster struck within 5 minutes as Langford were awarded a free kick a fully 35 yards from goal, and as the wall jumped it seemed to skid off the surface and under the despairing dive of Harvey and squirmed under his body to give Langorfd the perfect start.
This gave Banwell a much needed kick start and they duly started to play the better football for the next 10 minutes or so, a great move which involved Price, King and Grubb was cooly finished off by Hayes from the edge of the box brought Banwell level and they started to dominate the possesion as Langofrds attacks were either snuffed out by the experienced duo of Pennington & Mullins or their wide men were superbly marshalled by Price and Bradley who were both in no nonsense mood. Banwell were lucky on the half hour mark, a Langford mifielders 30 yard volley came back off the crossbar with Harvey beat.
Banwell were playing in fits and starts and it was on the 40th minute they pulled themselves into the lead as Dayle Grubb glided past 3 Langford players and finished superbly with his left foot leaving the keeper stranded and gave Banwell a 2-1 lead going into the break. Strong words were given by Diver as he tried to rally the troops as he knew this was far from over and demanded more football and determination in the 2nd half. King was forced to come off due to injury and was replaced by Hill on the left hand side of midfield during the interval.
Langford direct from the restart came out guns blazing and hit the post as well as having 2 goal bound efforts cleared off the line in a scrambled minute as Banwell were slow out of the blocks yet again. They were made to pay for their lack of concentration on the 60th minute as the Langford striker found himself 1 on 1 with Harvey from a long ball and made no mistake giving Langford a lifeline and the equaliser 2-2. Banwell then within 10 minutes found themselves 3-2 in front as great work from Ferris and Hayes found Grubb on the edge of the box and his right foot drive nestled in the bottom right corner and Banwell then scored a 4th shortly after only for the home linesman to adjudge Brooker to be offside as he rose between the Langford centre backs and headed into the top corner, the refereee disallowed the goal and then 2 Banwell penalty decisions were waved away as Langford got back level after a back header from Mullins fell short and Harvey was near the edge of his box and was lobbed cleverly to give Langford the momentum in a humdinger of a game.
With only minutes remaining Banwell lost the ball and were hanging on waiting for the whistle, Langford in all fairness to them were looking for the winner and didnt stop running and it was rewarded when they scored the winner with seconds left on the clock and the game ended 4-3 in favour of Langford and Banwells 8 match unbeaten run came to an end in a game which was lost on bad decisions from players and officials alike.
Banwell still sit at the top of the table but will have to put another run together to stay there til the end of the season as Langford are now only 1 point behind them with 2 games in hand, although they do have to play 3rd place Portishead home and away, who have only lost once this year, consequently to Banwell 4-0 back in October.
Some excellent performances from Harvey in goal made some crucial blocks and saves, Price and Bradley both played out of their skins at full backs and Pennington was superb in the middle with Mullins. Hayes and King did well along with Grubb in the first half, with Pugh Jones becoming more impressive in the 2nd half but it was their lack of determination, warrant, and a few players going missing in the game which led to the downfall of defeat. Credit to Langford who didnt stop and seemed to want it that little bit more than some of the Banwell players and this paid dividends.
Fairsave & SWR Electrotech Man of the Match went to Bradley at right back who was superb throughout.
This week Banwell travel to Congresbury in search of 3 points to keep them at the top of the league.
RESULT: BANWELL 6 V CLEVEDON UTD 2
Banwell looked to continue their 7 game unbeaten run as they hosted local rivals Clevedon Utd at the Riverside.
However they were forced into several changes before kick off as no less than 6 regulars were either injured, away or unavailable and then more problems as Andy Hayes failed to show. Harvey as always in goal with a reshuffled back line of Bradley at left back, Russ Mitchell right back, with Mullins & Pennington shoring up the middle, Duncan and Dale Grubb in central midfield with Hill and Lucas out wide, leaving King in the hole, just behind Ferris who ploughed a lone field up front.
Banwell came out of the traps with aplomb and with real determination to hit Clevedon quickly with early attacks, and so it proved conclusive when a determined run from Mitchell whose rebounded header from a corner fell back to him and he volleyed into the left corner from 12 yards giving Banwell the perfect start, it got better soon after as Ferris finished well after a superb ball from young Grubb who was pulling all the strings to put Banwell 2-0 up after only 10 minutes.
Chances were few and far between for Clevedon whose attacks were either snuffed out by a resolute back line or their long balls were swept up excellently by the ever impressive Harvey in the Banwell goal. Clevedon couldnt contain the dynamic Grubb and King who linked up well as King made it 3-0 with a great finish from the edge of the box giving the Clevedon keeper no chance and Banwell were now cruising. Clevedon tightened up and made it hard as Ferris unfortunately took a knock after 35 minutes but tried to see it into half time. Just before the break King notched his 2nd of the game and Banwells 4th as they went in 4-0 up and full of beans.
Ferris had to be replaced by Diver as Clevedon came out firing on all cylinders as within 10 minutes of the 2nd half were back in the game after 2 goals,1 coming from a long ball over the top which disected the usual strong and consistent back line, the other from the spot as the referee awarded a dubious penalty after waving 2 more likely penalties away to the home side in the 1st half, this gave Clevedon the impetus to fight on.
Banwell took time to settle in the 2nd half but the lead was soon restored to 5-2 after good work from the pacey Diver whose flick on found King wide right whose whipped cross was met by oncoming youngster Damo Hill at the back post and his left footed volley rocketed into the top right corner knocking them back yet again. Banwell were scrapping and fighting hard as a physical Clevedon side were making it difficult for them to play their football and the pitch was starting to churn up. Harvey made a superb save to keep Banwell well in front and the game was wrapped up 10 minutes from time after a great cross from Grubb was met by the righ boot of Mullins who made no mistake from 6 yards with a volley which found the top corner and Banwell were deserved 6-2 winners.
Excellent performances from Mitchell who slotted in briliantly at righ back, Pennington was a rock at the heart of the defence all game, youngsters King and Hill worked tirelessly all game alongside manager Duncan, but it was a simply awesome show from start to finish by 16 yr old Dale Grubb, whose game was in top shape and he ran the game with superb passing, silky runs and hard work and he was duly awarded the Fairsave / SWR Electrotech Man of the Match award.
This keeps Banwell 4 points clear of the chasing pack, and no doubt probably the biggest game of the season is this weekend as they travel to 2nd place Langford Rovers, who play behind Weston Football Club on Winterstoke Road, 2pm kick off. Supporters as always please come and watch your local team.RESULT: BANWELL 3 V YATTON 2
Banwell after a week off last weekend travelled over to mid-table Yatton, always a difficult side to beat on their own patch, but with 5 regulars missing they fielded a couple of reserve players and this wasnt going to be an easy game by any means.
Ever present Harvey was in goal, with Roger Mitchell, Pennington, Bradlay and Price shoring up the back line, Hayes and King were the wide men with Molloy and debutant Russ Mitchell in the middle, Brooker slotting in just in front of the midfield with Ferris up front. Hill, Duncan and Diver were the subs. The game started slowly with both sides struggling with the cold and windy conditions, Yatton were the 1st to create an opening but only a great save with his legs by Harvey denied Yatton taking an early lead.
Banwell then started to knock the ball around with more confidence as the game opened up and a couple of good chances fell to Russ Mitchell whose shot was well saved, and King who shot wide. Yatton hit Banwell on the break and after what looked a foul on Price, Yatton punished sloppy defending and opened the scoring on the half hour. Banwell responded with pressure staright away but the final ball was lacking unlike previous games where they have been scoring goals for fun. Yatton took a well deserved 1-0 lead into half time which could of easily been 3 or 4 had they took their chances.
More problems for an already make shift Banwell, as injuries to Molloy who was playing through the pain for the entire 1st half and Roger Mitchell were replaced by young Damo Hill and Manager Duncan respectively. Russ Mitchell slotted back to right back and Hill went out to the left as King came inside as Brooker moved back with Duncan in the middle of the park. These proved to be much inspired forced moves as Banwell saw more of the ball and Yatton were soon stunned as Ferris latched on to a great ball through from Duncan and chipped the oncoming keepers dive into an empty net, from just outside the box to bring Banwell level 5 minutes into the 2nd half.
Excellent work from young Hill who was beating his marker with ease on the left and a great ball to Hayes on the right whose shot was well saved by the keeper, but 5 minutes after a corner free kick from wide on the left was flicked on by Pennington and it was Ferris who slotted through a crowd of Yatton players to send Banwell into a 2-1 lead and they were now moving through the gears stylishly as Yatton went back into their shells. It was continuous pressure from Banwell as Yatton struggled to cope with the movement of Ferris, Brooker, Hill and Hayes, while at the other end superb defending by Russ Mitchell, Bradley, Pennington and Price were keeping Yattons strikers extremely quiet.
Yatton then rode their luck and pushed men forward to try and snatch a goal, they were rewarded with a stone cold penalty as skipper Bradley for some reason took their striker out just inside the box still with Pennington behind him. Yattons spot kick was brilliantly saved by Harvey diving to his left, he then saved the re-bound with his legs but could only look on as 2 Yatton players followed in and scrambled the ball into the net, 2-2 with 5 minutes to go.
Banwell pulled their socks up and went straight to the other end from the restart, great interplay from Brooker, Mitchell and Hayes set up that man again, Ben Ferris and he unleashed his right foot and the ball nestled in the corner giving the Yatton custodian no chance and Banwell a 3-2 lead with injury time remaining. Banwell played out the last couple of minutes and were made to work hard by a spirited Yatton side, but came through in the end to secure their 10th win of the campaign, and stretch 4 points clear at the top of the table.
An excellent 2nd half display, with superb performances from Harvey in goal who kept Banwell in the game, Russ Mitchell who made an inspirational debut at Centre Midfield and then Right Back, youngster Damien Hill who came on at half time and looks ready to step up to the plate, Hayes and Brooker in patches along with the whole of the back line of Roger Mitchell, Pennington, Bradley and Price, but for his Hatrick and a near perfect game, it was Ben Ferris who was awarded the SWR Electrotech / Fairsave man of the match.
This week Banwell host Clevedon United at the Riverside - 2pm kick off. Supporters as always welcome, come and watch your local team.
RESULT: BANWELL 3 V WRINGTON REDHILL 2
Banwell fresh from their convincing cup win last week were at the fortress Riverside Stadium again, hosting local neighbours Wrington Redhill who were at the other end of the table as Banwell looked to stay top of the league with a victory on a wet slippery pitch after a deluge of rain through the week.
A couple of injuries, work commitments and late nights meant that the starting line up changed slightly to what was planned before kick off, ever present Harvey was in goal with Bradley switching to left back, the returning Mitchell filled in at his usual slot at right back with Pennington and Mullins shoring up the centre of the back line. Debutant Hill started out on the right and King on the left as the centre of the park was controlled by the ever impressive Pugh Jones, Brooker and Hayes in the hole, behind Ferris up front. Price and Diver were the substitutes.
Banwell struggled to play their normal flowing game on the pitch as the ball was heavy and Wringtons players were not giving them any time or space on the ball, it was a scrappy first 15 minutes as both teams found it hard in the wintery conditions, and it was then that both sides knew the 1st goal could be crucial to the outcome. Mullins was unfortunate to take a blow to the head early on and after giving it 5 minutes he was replaced by the now wide awake Price who slotted in at left back as Bradley moved in to the centre with Pennington.
The game was end to end and both sides created few chances in the conditions, even though it was the home side that were playing the better football, looking to score the perfect goal, it was Wrington who took the lead after another long ball from the Wrington defence eluded the back line and Harvey was left no chance even though after saving the initial effort by Wringtons striker he could only watch in despair as the striker cooly fired in the rebound to give Wrington the lead and Banwell a wake up call. It stayed 1-0 to Wrington going into the interval and Banwell needed to up the tempo and desire to win if they were to get a positive result from the game.
After some strong positive words from both Manager Duncan and his assistant Diver to rally their troops it was Banwell who looked strong for the opening minutes of the 2nd half with a couple of chances going wide and over from Brooker and Hayes respectively. Banwell were playing much better on the pitch which started to cut up and the light was slowly detoriating as Hayes got Banwell back on level terms after a scramble in the Wrington box he unleashed a right toe punt which rifled into the back of the net giving Banwell a timely boost.
Banwell were starting to look more confident and they took their foot of the pedal and allowed Wrington back in a game which was turning every minute, Banwell struggled to clear their lines at the back and Wringtons striker made no mistake from 12 yards giving Harvey no chance and Banwell found themselves 2-1 down with only 25 minutes to go. Wrington just sat back for the next 10 minutes and soaked up each Banwell attack and duly dispatched their clearances into the local fields and houses nearby trying to hold on to their lead.
Disaster struck for Banwell as the ever consistent Pugh Jones pulled his groin with only 12 minutes to go and Diver had to come on in up front with Ferris moving back into the midfield, could there be a final twist in the tale as the spectators were struggling to see the ball as the fog came in and the light was disapearing fast. A great run from Hayes whose right foot cross was flicked on by Pennington and was neatly finished by the oncoming Diver to put Banwell back in the game at 2-2 with just 5 minutes to go.
It was all Banwell for the last 5 minutes the pace of Hayes and King caused problems for Wringtons full backs all afternoon, Brooker was finding more time on the ball and it was continous pressure from the home side as Divers introduction was causing all sorts of problems for Wringtons rearguard. The game was heading for a draw & with only seconds left as Banwell gained a corner which Ferris swang in, King flicked it to the 6 yard box it was that man again Diver who volleyed into the top right corner to send the players and supporters into jubilation and give Banwell an amazing 3-2 victory as the referee blew up on Wringtons restart.
A fascinating final 10 minutes, to what was a fairly untidy affair. Strong performances from Harvey who was solid again in goal, Skipper Bradley who was just everywhere, Price who came on and performed with credit after oversleeping, debutant Hill was unlucky not to score in the 1st half but showed good skill and pace out wide, Ferris was again the workhorse, but it was the introduction of super sub Diver, which was the inspiration to this victory and he duly picked up the SWR Electrotech and Fairsave Man of the Match award for his 2 goals in the last 5 minutes.
Banwell secured 3 vital points which kept them at the top of the table, as the 4 teams directly below them were also victorious last weekend, and they will be looking forward to take on Weston St Johns 1st XI in the Cup, at St Johns 2pm kick off.
RESULT: BANWELL 4 V FROME COLLEGIANS 0
Banwell had their 1st Cup match of the year and hosted Division 2 counterparts Frome Collegians who sit mid-table in the East division of the Somerset Senior Leagues.
Banwell although missing Dan Grubb, Mitchell and Pennington still put out a strong starting XI with Duncan and Diver warming the bench. Ever present Harvey in goal was joined by Price, Mullins, Sweeting & Bradley who gave Banwell the strong backbone to attack from.
With Pugh-Jones returning alongside Dayle Grubb and Brooker just in front, wide men King and Hayes were given licence to attack at every opportunity and supply lone man Ferris up front. Banwell started quite slowly, although pressing Frome they struggled to get their normally flowing passing game off the ground. Frome had the best of the game for the 1st 15 minutes but created little and Banwell’s back line were in superb form and proved a class act to break through with the presence of Mullins controlling every move of his patrol.
Banwell then found their feet and started to produce the flair and football the crowd were expecting, great work from Ferris, King and Brooker set up Hayes who duly dispatched his right foot drive from 12 yards into the bottom corner to give Banwell the breakthrough on 30 minutes.
Pugh Jones and Dayle Grubb started to get to grips in the center of the park and it was Grubb who drew a foul 30 yards out from Fromes goal, the free kick was smashed in from goal machine Brooker who let fly and the ball nestled in the top corner giving Banwell a commanding 2-0 lead at the interval.
Banwell came out in the 2nd half a lot stronger and started the better of the teams, Hayes and King were mesmering the Frome full backs and were creating plenty of chances for Ferris and the attacking Brooker to feed on and it was that man again who showed his class after great work from Hayes on the right who danced past 2 men, his cross found Ferris who controlled the ball on the penalty spot and flicked a pass to Brooker who from a tight angle took it down on his thigh and coolly volleyed it delicately over the keepers head into the opposite corner for a goal that would grace any game.
Frome did keep trying and throwing men forward in most attacks, but Banwell back line held firm, Harvey was pulled into action a couple of times and saved well from the Frome strikers who were finding it increasingly difficult to break the Banwell stranglehold and the line was marshaled superbly by Mullins and Sweeting in superb defensive performance.
Brooker completed his 2nd Hatrick of the season 10 minutes from time, yet another mazy run and cross from Hayes found Brooker 6 yards out and his glanced header found the bottom left corner to send Banwell through to the next round with a convincing 4-0 victory.
Great performances from Ferris, Mullins, Harvey, Hayes and Grubb but it was Brookers hatrick, which stole the Fairsave & SWR Electrotech Man of the Match accolade.
Banwell host Wrington-Redhill this week at the R iverside 2.30pm kick off, looking for another victory to keep them at the top of the table. All old and new supporters welcome.
MATCH REPORT: COMBE ST NICHOLAS V BANWELL - 10TH NOVEMBER 2007
RESULT: COMBE ST NICHOLAS 1 V BANWELL 1
After 2 successive clean sheets Banwell made the long journey to Combe St Nicholas, where they knew they would face a physical team who have a notoriously strong home record. But with no sign of the referee at kick off, the management duo of Duncan & Diver agreed for the Combe Manager to step in at last minute and referee the game where there was no other real alternative.
Banwell started slowly defending the slope for the 1st half, but with Mullins and Pennington at the heart of the back line, Combe were finding it extremely hard to penetrate and create any clear chances. Sweeting getting used to his new position at Right Back along with Price on the other side were dealt with Combe's speedy wingers extremely well and Harvey was a near spectator for the best part of the 1st half, tidying up a few over hit balls or back passes which he managed superbly kicking into the fierce wind and uphill.
Brooker and Bradley took time to find their marks on the game, as Hayes returning from work experience was causing constant problems in the hole just in front. Ferris was non-stop action up front and used his small frame to good use, his quick feet and touch enabled him to hold the ball up and bring wide men Stewart and King into the game at every opportunity and it was Kings early ball which found Ferris only 8 yards out but his effort was cleared off the line, and Bradley was denied the rebound by a good block from the Combe keeper. Shortly after great work from Hayes released Brooker finding space on the left and his precise left foot cross was met by the oncoming Ferris whose header flashed just past the upright and Banwell held on in a difficult half going in 0-0 at the interval.
Banwell came out alot quicker and sharper in the second half and were soon into top gear as Combe found it difficult to stop the movement of Ferris and Hayes in behind, Stuart and King were getting more ball out wide and Bradley and Brooker were starting to run the show with superb passing and link play which ended up in the 60th minute seeing great skill from King on the left, glided past 3 men, cut in on his favoured right side, and his shot flew into the bottom corner from 20 yards with the keeper well beat and Banwell were in a deserved 1-0 lead.
Combe were star struck and looked out on their feet as Banwell continued their onslaught and 3 or 4 chances went begging as Banwell looked to close out the game with a 2nd, but it didnt come even though King, Ferris, Brooker and Bradley had good chances which went wide or the home keeper saved.
With the clock ticking and Banwell cruising at a comfortable 1-0 the game looked over, but a long ball in the last minute stretched Banwell and the ball ran into the box with Mullins and the Combe striker closest, Mullins slid in and hit the ball against the Combe striker, who jumped over Mullins leg and hit the deck as the ball went out for a corner, only for the Combe Manager to point at the penalty spot and not only did this silence the home crowd, but incensed the Banwell players and managers as their was a lot of pushing and arguing as the ref put his head down and wouldnt explain why he had given his side the penalty. Banwell were distraught as the Combe winger despatched the spot kick past Harvey and the full-time whistle blew as Banwell kicked off the restart.
Banwell were robbed of a hard fought victory in a game they controlled extremely well, and 3 points which would of extended their lead at the top of the league to a much deserved 3 points. Combe players were embarassed as they walked off the pitch to a stunned crowd, who couldnt believe their eyes and thought Christmas had come early at Frog Lane. The Combe manager who in fairness reffed the game at the last minute could only put his head to the ground and walked off surely in embarrasment in what can only be described as a disgraceful decision and gifted his side a point which they simply did not deserve or earn for their performance.
Banwells players should however hold their heads high and great performances from Mullins and Pennington at the centre of the defence, along with Price, Bradley, King, Hayes and Ferris, but it was the ever impressive Sweeting who was awarded the Fairsave and SWR Electrotech Man of the Match award.
Banwell have a relaxing Cup Match this Saturday at the Riverside Stadium v Frome Collegians 2pm kick off. Supporters as always welcome, please come and support your local village side who are top of the table...
MATCH REPORT: BANWELL V LONG ASHTON - 03RD NOVEMBER 2007
RESULT: BANWELL 4 V LONG ASHTON 0
Banwell continued their title challenge hosting Long Ashton at their home fortress the Riverside Stadium. Banwell were still smarting after losing 3-0 in the reverse fixture a few weeks back, and were keen to erase from the memory banks an unusually poor and lacklustre display.
Banwell returned to nearly full strength with only top scorer Brooker, Dan Grubb and Hayes unavailable. The home side were soon in control of the game after a scratchy 10 minutes they got the ball down on the deck and were playing some impressive football with Ferris up front linking up really well with 16 year old Dale Grubb just in behind pulling the strings. King and Waters were the wide men and both saw plenty of ball early on and put it to good use with some skillful runs and deliveries into the Long Ashton box which they dealt well with initially.
Banwell were rarely troubled at the back and the back line of Harvey who sweeped up any over hit balls and his distribution was again superb, Sweeting slotted across to Right Back with Mullins and Pennington superbly marshalling the line in the middle with the hard working Price on the left. The midfield battle was all Banwells with Skipper Bradley working in tandem with the simply awesome Pugh Jones, along with young Grubb just in behind it was only a matter of time before their continued pressure produced a goal.
With 20 minutes on the clock Ferris latched on to a loose ball in the box and cooly slotted home from 10 yards to give Banwell a well deserved lead after some severe pressure and within 5 minutes of the restart Waters returning from injury got himself on the score sheet with a powerful run and good left footed finish which the keeper saved initally but he made no mistake with the rebound giving Banwell a 2-0 lead going into the break.
Banwell continued where they left off for the 2nd half and Long Ashton were constantly on the back foot defending for most parts. Superb passing from Banwells central midfield trio of Pugh Jones, Bradley and Grubb was in simply devastating form, picking out cross field balls to Waters who was replaced after 65 minutes by new Irish signing McKeever, and King on the other side was too much for Long Ashtons rear guard and only poor finishing or overplaying on some occasions resulted in Banwell not reaching double figures.
Harvey was pulled into action on a rare occasion, an Ashton clearance was latched onto by the visitors number 9, but Harvey was not for beating today and saved comfortably before setting up the next goal with a huge kick down field the ball was picked by Ferris who celverly found Grubb, and with his flair he cooly side footed his finish past the oncoming custodian into the corner of the net to give Banwell a 3-0 cushion.
It wasnt over and there was still time for more magic from young Grubb, a superb 45 yard pass which arrived at Bradleys feet who rounded the keeper and slotted home to give Banwell a comfortable 4-0 victory, in what can only be described as one-way traffic, better finishing along with more confidence would of resulted in a more rugby style score for the home side who moved into clear 2nd place in the league, only 3 points off top spot.
A superb team performance with great individual displays from Bradley, Pugh Jones, King, Pennington, and Grubb, but it was Tom Mullins who stole the Fairsave & SWR Electrotech Man of the Match award for a commanding display at Centre Half. Managers Man of the Match was awarded to Ben Pugh Jones for yet another flawless performance in Centre Midfield.
Banwell will need to continue thier fine run of form as they face a long trip to Combe St Nicholas this Saturday and to maintain 2nd spot in the league.
BANWELL 2 v 0 CONGRESBURY
Banwell went into this game after a crushing defeat to Nailsea Reserves knowing that they had to win to stay in touch with the league leaders. Pugh-Jones, Mullins, Price, Brooker & Pennington all returned to the starting line up after being away through work or injury. Banwell were still missing regulars Hayes and Dan Grubb but had a very strong side going into the game.
Congresbury started the stronger and bossed the first 15 minutes of the game with their direct and energetic approach. Slowly Banwell regained control of the game, working the ball at the back and out into midfield. The ball was passed wide to Dayle Grubb who glided passed three defenders before finishing clinically.
A tactical change meant Brooker moved out wide whilst Grubb slotted in behind Pennington. This caused problems immediately when Brooker hit a superb cross that was half cleared. The ball then arrived at Pugh Jones who steadied himself and hit a thunderbolt from 25 years only to see it deflect of the top corner of the bar and back into play.
Great play down the left from Brooker, Price and Grubb meant that Pennington was set clear but a good save from the keeper denied Pennington a goal. The midfield of Grubb, King, Bradley, Pugh Jones and Brooker took control and another 1 of 1 for Pennington was saved by Congresbury goalkeeper keeping them in the game.
Banwell again started the 2nd half well and dominated the first 15 minutes with good possession play. Banwell however sat on this lead , and the wind mixed with Conresbury;s new attacking attitude was causing Banwell problems. A direct kick from the goal keeper was flicked on and Lush’s effort found the net but a good defensive line meant he was off-side. Another flick on let the Congresbury forward in and Harvey made a brave save at his feet to keep the slender lead.
Great skill down the left from King lead to a corner from Grubb was met on the full by Price who scored a great header. At 2 - 0 you would have though Banwell would be dominating but to be fair to Congresbury they made substitutions and went 3 up front causing Banwell problems. Luckily Banwell had Bradley and Pugh Jones worked tirelessly and efficiently in midfield to stifle Congresbury suppling these forwards.
The game was now very open and chances fell thick and fast to Banwell, although, Congresbury did have much of the possession. Great Skill from Brooker as he beat 2 players was ruined when he miss hit the shot into the side netting when only 5 yards from goal. On the other flank great skill from King meant he charged down the left beating his man only to see the angle get too small as the keeper mad a great save as King shot from 6 yards out.
Pennington had another one on one with the keeper which was made by the impressive Price, and Bradley could only put his hand on his head in frustration after his great run was ruined by a heavy touch as he went clean through.
Well done to the Banwell defence of Mitchell, Mullins, Sweeting and Price who held onto the end to record a clean sheet and a special mention to Pennington who worked hard upfront as the lone striker. The FAIRSAVE players man of the match went to Pugh-Jones who was a rock in midfield. SWR Electrotech Managers Man of the Match went to Harvey in Goal.
MATCH REPORT - 13th October 2007
Banwell 4 v Berrow 3
Rainfall meant the pitch was greasy and this caused a very scrappy start. Due to an early kick off a few of the players struggled to make it for the whistle and Banwell started with 10 players.
Berrow started the stronger doing the mainstay of the attacking for the 1st ten minutes. A quick counter from Banwell led to a throw in high up the pitch. Brooker’s enormous throw was headed around the box before Ferris cleverly brought the ball down with his back to goal and his flick was pure quality as it nestled in the net.
Banwell’s 11th player turned up and Berrow’s direct style now being dealt with well by a strong defence of Mitchell, Pennington, Sweeting and Grubb and the impressive Harvey in goal cleaned up any balls in behind superbly.
15 minutes in, Hayes picked the ball up on the right and moved past his player easily with his skill and speed, was always going to be a thorn in Berrow’s side this afternoon. His cross was met by a crashing volley by Ferris which was unbelievably saved by the Berrow keeper only for Sam King to be the sharpest in the box and net his 2nd goal of the season.
Dayle Grubb and Pugh Jones worked tirelessly in midfield and their quality was rewarded when a clever run from Pugh Jones ended up with him being pushed in the back for a penalty. Pugh Jones confidently stood up grabbed the ball and scored his 1st goal of the season with ease.
Just before half time Berrow applied good pressure and their forward broke clear only to be outfoxed by the Fantastic Harvey in Goal. With 20 seconds to go a ball was lumped into the box and broke kindly to Berrow for them to score keeping the game a contest for the spectators.
Banwell started the 2nd half better and moved the ball around with confidence and quality that wasn’t shown in the 1st half. A clever run from Brooker resulted in him being picked out in the box. His resulting chest control then fell to Pennington, which resulted in an emphatic finish in the top corner of the net.
4 – 1 and Banwell was cruising until the referee had other ideas. A corner for Berrow and a Banwell player was adjudged to have pushed a player before heading it clear. Both teams were surprised by the decision and it appeared that the referee gave it to even up the penalty count.
The Berrow player stepped up and creamed the ball to the left of Harvey but a full length Harvey made a two handed save and pushed the ball around the post for a corner. The save was spectacular but was not done justice as from the resulting corner Banwell failed to clear 4 times and Berrow pinched a 2nd. A melee broke out, as it appeared the Berrow player was significantly offside. No punches were thrown but Mitchell ended up being kicked on the floor and then astoundingly he was the player sent off. It was another crazy decision by a ref that seemed well out of his depth.
Berrow applied pressure and scored a third but Banwell managed to hold on to the end for another 3 points keeping them just in behind Langford, the league leaders.
Man of the Match was Antony Harvey who just becomes better and better each week.
A special mention to Dayle Grubb who was outstanding in midfield and it wont be long before more professional clubs come knocking on this 16 year old’s door.
MATCH REPORT: Banwell v Portishead - 06th October 2007
RESULT: Banwell 4 v Portishead 0
After a weeks rest, Banwell travelled to Portishead who hadnt lost at home for a year and had to deal with 3 late withdrawals namely Mullins, Lilwall and Price in this top of the table encounter.
Banwells reshuffled pack lined up with the ever present Harvey in goal, Bradley switched to right back, Pennington and Sweeting controlled the middle with Dan Grubb on the left. Debutant Andy Hayes started right midfield with King on the left, leaving Pugh-Jones, Grubb and Brooker in the middle with Ferris switching from his usual right midfield role to centre forward which left Mitchell and Duncan on the bench.
Banwell were soon out of the blocks and found themselves 1-0 up within a matter of minutes, the move was started and finished by Ferris who made himself strong in the Portishead area, before laying the ball back for Pugh Jones whose shot was deflected out to the right and Hayes delivered a perfect cross to the back post where Ferris rose high and powered a header into the top corner giving Banwell the perfect start. Shortly after, great work from Ferris yet again, layed the ball back to the oncoming Brooker whose left foot shot was drilled into the bottom corner giving the Portishead keeper no chance and Banwell were 2-0 to the good and on top of the game.
The back line was superbly marshalled by the central paring of Sweeting and Pennington, Bradley not acustomed to playing at right back along with Grubb on the other flank snuffed out any Portishead attacks and Harvey was left to sweep up behind, picking up Portisheads long balls which were off target more often than not. Hayes and the young improving King were a nuisance out wide and were causing havoc to Portisheads rearguard, whilst Ferris who worked tirelessly for the cause up front was simply awesome as Banwell held on to their 2-0 cushion as the half time whistle blew.
Banwell came out as they had in the first half and were in complete control of the game, Portishead were chasing shadows and it was on the stroke of 55 minutes when Ferris again caused the Portishead defence problems with his pace and touch after great work from Hayes and King, and Brooker was on hand to notch his 9th goal in 7 games from 2 yards out with a powerful finish. Harvey was forced into a couple of saves midway throught he half as Portishead managed to get a couple of corners and build some pressure but Banwell weathered these 5 minutes superbly well and didnt look like conceeding as the battle hardend qualities of Pugh Jones, Pennington, Dan Grubb and Sweeting were in simply great fettle throughout and Portishead found no way through this brick wall of a defensive line.
Brooker was given a rest with 20 minutes to go and Mitchell came on to his more preffered central role and seemed to be everywhere as Banwell pressed on and looked to increase thier lead, Hayes and Dayle Grubb linked up well with Ferris on numerous occasions and the final goal was caused by the previous named trio whose quick passing caused a Portishead player to put his keeper in trouble and who was there to knock the rebound in to an empty net, you guessed it, it was Mitchell who couldnt miss from 5 yards as Banwell deservedly scored their 4th goal of the game and Portishead were out on their feet. The final whistle went, Banwell were impressive 4-0 winners, in probably their best display of the season so far, and maintained 2nd position in the league.
A superb team effort by the visitors and it was hard to single out a man of the match as there was simply too many great performances, although it was whittled down to a shortlist of debutant Hayes who was impressive on the right, Pugh Jones who didnt stop tackling, winning headers and organising the middle of the park, the whole back line of Harvey, Bradley, Pennington, Sweeting and Grubb Snr who were outstanding, but it was Ben Ferris in his new role as lone striker who just edged it for what can only be described as a perfect individual performance, and he won the Fairsave / SWR Man of the Match award.
Banwell will look to continue their impressive form this week as they entertain Berrow at home down the Riverside, 3pm kick off. All supporters old and new welcome.
MATCH REPORT: Banwell v Long Ashton - 22nd September 2007
RESULT: Banwell 0 v Long Ashton 3
Banwell travelled to Long Ashton on another sunny afternoon after suffering their 1st defeat of the season the previous week, looking to get their promotion bid back on track with a victory against the little known Long Ashton side.
With a couple of late withdrawals due to injury, Banwell were forced into making a few changes to the previous weeks line up, Sweeting and Lilwall paired up at the centre of the defensive four alongside the ever present full backs of Dan Grubb and Mitchell with custodian Harvey as always in goal. Ferris and King resumed out wide on the flanks with Price, Bradley and Brooker returning to the midfield triangle leaving Pennington as the striker. Dale Grubb joined Diver on the bench.
It couldnt of started any worse for Banwell, the back line was caught knapping twice in the first 10 minutes, and 2 long balls from the Long Ashton defence were latched onto by Ashtons strikers and they gave Harvey no chance with assured finishes, giving Long Ashton a dream start 2-0 up in a matter of minutes. It didnt get any better for the visitors as they were paid to pay for simple mistakes in the middle of the park and Ashton soon made it 3-0 after 20 minutes.
Banwell were shell shocked and the players were finding the small pitch hard to create space and play their natural flowing game, however they had 3 or 4 clear chances before half time, either lacking the final touch in front of goal, or the final ball was simply not upto standards. Long Ashton sat back and let Banwell play for the last 1/3 of the 1st half snuffing out any chances that came along and seemed determined to sit on their lead and duly did so going into the break 3-0 to the good. Pennington and Brooker both had good chances to get Banwell back into the game just before the whistle and it looked only a matter of time before the chances turned into goals.
Banwell changed Lilwall and Bradley at Half time with Dale Grubb replacing brother Dan and Price slotted back to left back in an effort to get back into the game which was slowly going away from their grasp. Strong words by Duncan and Diver were taken on board and the start of the 2nd half was much better than the start of the 1st, Banwell seized the Ashton goal but were struggling to put the ball in the net but with probably 80% of the possesion it surely was only round the corner before Banwell scored.
But Ashtons defence held firm Pennington, King, Dale Grubb, Brooker and Lilwall all seeing efforts either blocked, saved or missing the target and it was becoming increasingly frustrating having the ball for the best part of the game but not taking the chances. Diver came on for Brooker with 10 minutes to go to try and change the play and unsettle the Ashton back line without any joy. Ashton held on for what can only be described as a one sided game but the home side ran out dogged 3-0 victors and claimed all 3 points with Banwell scratching their heads at how they didnt score at least a goal in creating at least 15 good chances.
In a lacklustre team performance, there were some positives skipper Bradley proved equal to the task at centre half, Dan Grubb made some great trackles and driving runs down the left, Pennington ran tirelessly for the cause without any return, Lilwall looked more comfortable in midfield and Price was solid after moving to full back.
Banwell have a week off this week, and it will be back to the drawing board before another local clash with Portishead next Saturday 06th October at Portishead, where Banwell need to erase the last 2 games and pick up a positive result in what is going to be an intriguing clash.
MATCH REPORT: Banwell v Langford Rovers - 15th September 2007
RESULT: Banwell 1 v Langford Rovers 2
Banwell played hosts to local rivals and second placed Langford Rovers at the Riverside, in a game which they knew was going to be their toughest assignment yet and they were at virtually full strength except the injured Mullins and Sweeting.
Lilwall and Price made the centre back pairing with Mitchell and Grubb Snr the full backs, Pugh Jones, Bradley and Grubb filled the middle with Brooker up front, and King and Ferris the wide men. The home side started quickly and it wasnt long before a superb 40 yard cross field pass from Pugh Jones found Ferris wide on the right and he beat his man with ease and slotted the ball into the net to give Banwell the perfect start after just 5 minutes.
Langford were still in the changing room and were rocked by this early setback and Banwell went on the attack again soon after as Grubb brothers Dan and Dale linked up after a surging run from Dan led to Dale being fed in behind Langfords line with just the keeper to beat he pulled his left foot drive from a tight angle past the post with the keeper well beaten. Shortly after a excellent corner from Ferris found Brooker 6 yards out and his powerful header went just over the bar. This seemed to wake Langford up and they started to get into the game with the hardworking Crandon creating space in the midfield and he attempted along with Ward to get on the ball more and carve out some chances which were few and far between as the back four was superbly marshalled and their line was in good shape and Langford struggled to create any clear efforts on goal. Harvey made a few good takes from corners and crosses and his distribution was, as always, superb.
The game started to get messy and alot of tackles from both sides were going in, and the unfortunate Pugh Jones was the 1st in the book after what can only be described as a superb tackle but the referee saw otherwise, this intensified the game as Banwell went into the break 1-0 to the good, without playing their normally flowing style.
Banwell came out with a bit more urgency at the start of the second half as they pushed for that second goal which could of put the game to bed, but after good play on both wings by Ferris and young King the final delivery just wasnt there, the long balls were getting soaked up by Popperwell who won the aerial battle with Brooker.
Pennington was brought on for Bradley to change the game and use his fresh legs and aerial ability to unsettle Langfords back line, Banwell seemed very nervous with just a goal advantage, any creative play was being ruined by the final ball, or Langfords physical approach, the referees decisions seemed to start going in favour of the visitors and Banwell were angered by an awful tackle on Grubb Snr which only saw a caution from the referee. Langford won a free kick wide left which was taken quickly as Ward whipped the ball over and Crandon was on hand to nod past the helpless Harvey from 5 yards out bringing Langford back into a game where they should of been out of sight at half time.
King was then fouled inside the box and Banwell thought they had won a penalty only to see the referee quash their appeal and wave play on, Grubb jnr had a good effort saved along with Penningtons header which just missed the target. It looked likely the points were going to be shared in a messy game but in the last minute of the game Ellis was adjudged to of been pulled down in the Banwell area, as Price and Ellis were both pulling shirts, the penalty was awarded this time and Crandon made no mistake with a cooly struck effort and handed Langford a 2-1 victory and the 3 points that should of only been 1 as Banwell felt cheated by the penalty decision that didnt go their way 10 minutes previous.
Good performances from Lilwall, Mitchell, Grubb Snr and King, but the Man of the Match award went to the tireless Pugh Jones who battled all afternoon with no joy or reward for his efforts. Banwell need to move on this week and pick up victory against Long Ashton to keep themselves ahead of the pack at the top of the table, but will need to show harder battling qualities and improvement on the final ball which seemed to go missing here.
MATCH REPORT: BANWELL V CREECH ST MICHAEL - 08TH SEPTEMBER 2007
RESULT: BANWELL 3 V CREECH ST MICHAEL 1
After 3 successive wins Banwell took their 100% record to Taunton Town feeder side Creech St Michael, and with virtually a full strength squad they took to the field in confident mood ahead of their toughest assignment yet.
Banwell started as they have the last 3 games, knocking the ball around well on what seemed an extremely large pitch and it played to their strengths for the first 15 minutes of the game, as they controlled the pace and Creech were chasing shadows for the best part, until a lapse of concentration cost them as they lost the ball high up the pitch, Creech broke with pace and Harvey could only look on in despair as he was left one on one with the Creech striker, who cooly side footed the ball into the bottom corner giving Creech and undeserved 1-0 lead and Banwell a wake up call.
This shook Banwell for the best part of 20 minutes and their shape and coolness on the ball went out the window tempararily, Creech hit the bar twice in this period and Harvey made 2 saves from the top drawer to keep Banwell in a game they looked to be throwing away. But then the Grubb brothers stepped up to the plate and a full length pitch run from Dan which he cruised past 3 Creech players before laying it off to the ever impressive younger brother Dale, who quickly made a yard on his right side and left the keeper standing with a right foot drilled finish which flew into the net giving Banwell the lift they required just before the break. Other chances were put over by young King and Brookers 30 yard screamer unfortunately went straight into the keepers hands as Banwell raised the tempo as the whistle brought an end to what was a strange 45 minutes.
Managers Duncan & Diver were not overly impressed with their troops 1st half performance, and demanded an improved 2nd 45 minutes to put this game to bed and the 2nd half started meaningfully as Banwell found another gear and chances were starting to appear, 1st it was Ferris whose shot went just wide before as long range effort from skipper Bradley was well blocked on the line, Brooker hit the bar shortly after, but then a superb pass from Grubb at left back put King in on the wide left and he cut inside his marker before unleashing a 20 yard left footer which the keeper did well to push into the air and it was Brooker who was on hand to head into an empty net giving Banwell a 2-1 lead with 30 minutes to go.
Unfortunately Mullins after a great game had to retire due to injury and was replaced by Price who slotted in at left back with Dan Grubb pushing into the middle to join Sweeting and Mitchell in the back line. Grubb then produced what can only be described as a superb goal saving tackle as he made up 10 yards and slid in to deny the Creech striker just as he pulled the trigger. Harvey in goal was a spectator for much of the 2nd half with only a few long range efforts to deal with due to Banwells defence being superbly marshalled by Grubb and Sweeting.
Lucas then replaced the hard working King wide left, who was suffering with injury and instantly made an impact with a good run behind the Creech defence but was in two minds as he crossed rather than backing himself and the threat went, soon after excellent work by Mitchell and Ferris down the right allowed Brooker to latch on to Ferris's cross and he poked home from 6 yards past the helpless Creech keeper and gave Banwell a cushion at 3-1 with 15 minutes remaining. Lilwall and Bradley then dominated the possesion along with young Grubb and Banwell were in cruise mode. The game was ended 5 minutes from time as the Creech left winger fell awkardly and suffered a serious leg injury, the referee decided along with the Managers to blow the final whistle and Banwell continued their pursuit at the top of the league, with a hard fought 3-1 victory.
Strong performances from Lilwall, Sweeting, Dan Grubb, King and Brooker, but it was young Dale Grubb who took his goal tally to 3 in 3 games who stole the Fairsave Man of the Match accolade.
Banwell host local rivals Langford Rovers this Saturday at Riverside 3pm kick off. All supporters old and new welcome.
Match Report – 01st September 2007 – Banwell v Weston St Johns
Banwell 3 v Weston St Johns 0
Banwell cruised to their 3rd win in three games with a comfortable victory over a young Weston St Johns side taking them to 2nd in the league.
Great work by Sam King and Chris Bradley led to 16 year old Dayle Grubb rounding the St Johns goalkeeper and finishing in style. 2 in 2 games for Grubb. Again the exceptional Sam King had a hand in the 2nd goal, dispossessing the defender and squaring the ball for Mark Brooker to tap in.
In the second half St Johns started the stronger, but defensive four of Mitchell, Sweeting, Mullins and Grubb held their line and defended brilliantly.
A skilful break by King follow by a nutmeg pass lead to the ball again being squared for the goal machine Brooker to score his 5th goal in the last 2 games.
Banwell had other quality moves to note. Bradley and Lillwall exchanged passes in midfield with Bradley volleying just wide. A strong run from left back Dan Grubb lead to Ferris drawing the defender in and releasing Grubb to hit a rasping shot just over from 25 yards.
St Johns to their credit changes to a 4-3-3 formation late in the game and did create a few chances. A couple of older heads in their talented young side and they could yet be a force in the league.
Man of the match was given to Thomas Mullins whose organization and performances just get stronger. He was closely followed by Goalkeeper Anthony Harvey whose handling was exemplarily.
MATCH REPORT: BANWELL V CLEVEDON UTD - 25TH AUGUST 2007
RESULT: BANWELL 4 V CLEVEDON UTD 1
Banwell looked to continue their fast start to the new season and after victory against Nailsea the previous week, Clevedon were next in line at Coleridge Vale.
Banwell missing Sweeting, Price and Capille from last week, recalled Bradley, Triffit and Diver as able replacements. Banwell were quick out of the blocks and started as they finished last week with sharp, attractive football on Clevedons wide pitch which played to the visitors strengths as Ferris and the fast improving King were beating their markers with consumate ease and it didnt take long for Banwell to break the deadlock, a confusion erupted in Clevedons back line and the ball flew to Brooker a full 30 yards out with the keeper out of his ground he duly unleashed his trusty left foot and the ball ended up hitting the back of the net halfway up giving Banwell the lead they deserved.
Solid play from the back line of Dan Grubb, Mullins, Bradley & Mitchell allowed the ever impressive Pugh Jones and talented 16yr old Dale Grubb to control the middle of the park with Brooker looking in fine fettle just in front, supporting the endless running of striker Pennington it was only a matter of time before Banwell extended their lead, Brooker jinked past 3 Clevedon defenders and his left boot curled the ball over the keeper into the top corner after good work from Grubb jnr and Ferris. Clevedon were struggling to create chances and were chasing shadows for the best part of the 1st half, Dale Grubb was growing in stature and he picked the ball up on the edge of the box, made 2 yards and found the bottom corner with superb accuaracy and Banwell were cruising to half time at 3-0. Clevedon were awarded a late free kick just before half time which on this occasion the defence didnt clear and left the Clevedon striker an easy tap in past Harvey in Banwells goal who was only a spectator until then and Clevedon were given a lift right on the strike of half time at 3-1.
After strong words from Banwells management duo of Duncan & Diver at the break, Banwell were keen to improve on the 1st halfs efforts and ensure Clevedon were put out of reach as they missed 4 or 5 good chances in the 1st 45 minutes. Clevedon came out strong looking to get their 2nd goal and back into the game which Banwell had a stranglehold of, and only a superb sliding tackle from Dan Grubb just as the Clevedon striker looked destined to score saved Banwell, and ended the clevedon strikers afternoon as he picked up an injury from the tackle. Banwell pushed on after this and Triffit replaced the tireless King, who had a superb game and is starting to show his true potential at this level. After 3 successive corners from Ferris, Clevedons keeper was having trouble clearing his lines and it was the man of the moment Brooker again who volleyed in from 6 yards as the ball fell kindly off the flick on from Pennington giving Banwell a 4-1 lead with only 15 minutes to go.
It was time to consolidate and Pugh Jones and Grubb jnr sat tight in midfield, hatrick hero Brooker unfortunately was injured shortly after scoring and was replaced by Diver who slowed the game down and Banwell had done enough as the final whistle blew and they secured the 3 points and continued their 100% start to the season.
In what was again a strong team performance it was difficult to pick out individuals, and the man of the match award was credited to Brooker for his 3 goals and instrumental play which caused problems all afternoon for the home side. Excellent performances from both Dan & Dale Grubb, Pugh Jones, Pennington, King and Mullins at the heart of the defence were just a few to mention in what can only be described as a great team effort and the bandwagon keeps on rolling. Banwell will look forward to next week as they entertain local rivals Weston St Johns this Saturday at home, Riverside, Banwell 3pm kick off.
MATCH REPORT: BANWELL V NAILSEA UTD - 18TH AUGUST 2007
RESULT: BANWELL 2 V NAILSEA UTD 1
BANWELL KICKED OFF THE NEW SEASON & HOSTED LOCAL RIVALS NAILSEA UTD AT THE RIVERSIDE GROUND ON WHAT TURNED INTO A FAST TEMPO GAME, DUE TO THE EARLIER RAIN MAKING THE PITCH SLICK AND IT SUITED THE BANWELL STYLE OF PLAY AS THEY STARTED OFF STRONGLY WITH THEIR LINE UP OF DEBUTANT HARVEY IN GOAL, MITCHELL, SWEETING, MULLINS AND GRUBB IN THE BACK LINE, ANOTHER DEBUT WAS GIVEN TO PUGH-JONES WHO ALONGSIDE PRICE AND BROOKER CONTROLLED THE MIDDLE OF MIDFIELD, YOUNG SAM KING WIDE LEFT AND FERRIS ON THE RIGHT, AND THE TOWERING PENNINGTON UP FRONT.
THE FIRST 20 MINUTES WERE A TYPICAL 1ST GAME OF SEASON, QUITE CAGEY WITH BOTH TEAMS GETTING USED TO EACH OTHERS POSITIONING AND THE PITCH WAS NOW LIKE AN ICE RINK AS THE BALL FLEW OFF THE SURFACE AS BANWELL INCREASED THEIR TEMPO WHICH UNSETTLED THE NAILSEA REARGUARD WITH THE DANGEROUS BROOKER SUPPORTING PENNINGTON WELL, ALLOWING THE BANWELL WIDE MEN KING AND FERRIS TO WORK THE FLANKS WITH APLOMB. THE BREAKTHROUGH WAS MADE ON THE 25 MINUTE MARK AS PRICE DREW A FOUL ABOUT 30 YARDS FROM GOAL, BROOKER DRILLED A FEROCIOUS LOW LEFT FOOTER WHICH THE NAILSEA KEEPER COULDNT HANDLE AND IT WAS PENNINGTON WHO SLID IN AND SCORED THE REBOUND AND BANWELL WERE 1-0 UP AND WELL ON THE FRONT FOOT.
BANWELLS BACK LINE WERE LOOKING STRONG AND NOT SEVERELY TESTED BY THE NAILSEA FORWARDS, BUT WERE MADE TO PAY FOR SOME MISPLACED PASSING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARK AS THE NAILSEA LEFT WINGER GAVE MITCHELL THE SLIP OUT WIDE, CUT IN FROM THE LEFT AND UNLEASHED A RIGHT FOOTER FROM 20 YARDS WHICH HARVEY COULD ONLY GET HIS FINGERTIPS TO PUSH IT INTO THE TOP RIGHT CORNER, A FINE FINISH WHICH GAVE NAILSEA A BIT OF HOPE JUST BEFORE HALF TIME. ALTHOUGH SOME WELL WORKED CORNERS FROM FERRIS WHICH YOUNG KING HAD A HEADER AND MISCUED SHOT SEE WELL SAVED ALONG WITH A HEADER FROM THE DANGEROUS PENNINGTON SAW THE HALF TIME SCORE LEVEL AT 1-1.
BANWELL CAME OUT EVEN STRONGER IN THE SECOND HALF WITH EARLY EFFORTS FROM PRICE, BROOKER, AND KING JUST MISSING THE TARGET. NAILSEA WERE KEPT ON THE BACK FOOT FOR LONG PERIODS AND IT SEEMED ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE PRESSURE TOLD ON THE NAILSEA REARGUARD. IT WAS THEN WHEN YOUNG KING FOLLOWED IN AFTER A SHOT FROM BROOKER WAS CLEARED AND PRICE LET RIP WITH A RIGHT FOOT EFFORT FROM JUST OUTSIDE THE BOX WHICH THE NAILSEA KEEPER COULD ONLY PUSH OUT AND KING WAS ON HAND TO HEAD IN TO AN EMPTY NET GIVING BANWELL A 2-1 LEAD WITH 20 MINUTES TO GO. NAILSEA PUSHED HARD LOOKING FOR THE EQUALISER, BUT THE BACK FOUR OF MITCHELL, SWEETING AND GRUBB WAS SUPERBLY MARSHALLED BY SKIPPER MULLINS AND NAILSEA COULDNT GET THROUGH. UNFORTUNATELY KING WAS SUBJECT TO A LATE INJURY AND HE WAS REPLACED OUT WIDE BY CAPILLE. BANWELL HELD FIRM FOR THE LAST FEW MINUTES TO KICK OFF THEIR SEASON WITH A MUCH DESERVED 2-1 VICTORY AND MORE IMPORTANTLY 3 POINTS IN THE BAG.
IN WHAT CAN ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS AN EXCELLENT TEAM PERFORMANCE, IT WAS A DIFFICULT DECISION TO NAME A MAN OF THE MATCH, BUT AFTER MUCH DEBATE IT WAS AWARDED TO DAN GRUBB FOR HIS TIRELESS RUNNING, MANY OVERLAPS AND FAULTLESS DISPLAY AT LEFT BACK.
BANWELL WILL LOOK TO CONTINUE THEIR GREAT START TO THE SEASON AND MOMENTUM TOMORROW AS THEY TRAVEL TO CLEVEDON UNITED LOOKING FOR ANOTHER MAXIMUM HAUL.
