Banwell FC have their 'Tidy-Up Weekend' this weekend Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th January starting from 10.00 Saturday morning...
The idea of this is to prepare existing walls with damp protection, clear rubbish into tips which are being hired for the weekend, paint changing rooms, tidy up the look of the club eg outside, rubbish.
It would be much appreciated if we can get a few of us down there to help, more hands will take less time.
Even if its just for a couple of hours either days or both your help will be appreicated.
Many thanks
Brad Diver

We will have the carpet/vinyl fitted once the Clubhouse has been repainted – any volunteers please let your manager know.
We have managed to tidy up the car park and thanks go to Brian Holden & Stuart Hornigold who took a day off work to sort this out.
Anyone interested in a Boxing Day lads v dads match please let your Manager know asap.

Dennis Elmer has been holding a Saturday Football Club for Under 6’s which we have had some positive feedback on. If anyone is interested in setting up and taking on an Under 6’s team please let Dennis or Brian Holden know. We are willing to help you get your FA Level 1 coaching qualifications and will give as much help and support with kit/advice etc.

Moans, Groans & Gripes
Can we ask that parents & players respect our Club especially the dugout and changing rooms. Please take your rubbish home with you!! We know that these areas are nothing special but the Committee and parents are working hard to bring these up to standard as well as raising money so that we can apply to Somerset FA for a grant to build new accommodation but while we have what we have please respect it. If we waste money repairing damage we won’t have the money to apply for the grant as we have to stump up 10% of the full cost.
Website - www.banwellfc.com.
This has been a success and now has a forum for players/parents to put their comments about anything within the Club – but please keep it suitable for all ages. Any player going onto this site and being abusive will be banned so you have been warned – we know where you live!! We have had an estimated 40-60 hits a day so this is proving popular.

Words from the Managers on the new season:
Under 8’s Manager: Gary Bretherton Asst Manager: Andrew Camper
Banwell under 8s have been running as a team since June 2006. Since that time we have now managed to get a squad of 18 players signed up for the 2007/2008 season.
The team is now growing in strength and structure as we set out to achieve our first goal to win the Woodspring league next year in our first year of competing in it.
We have had a lot of help this year from the following sponsors:
Morse’s Motorcycles: Home kit sponsor
The Cube @ Morse’s: Away kit sponsor
Sainsbury’s: Training kit sponsor
Cases: Hoodies sponsor
DHL: Footballs sponsor
T-shirt emporium WSM: Printing
Community Union: Training tops sponsor
A big thanks to all of these for their help and support. The introduction of the Under 8s own web site as been really helpful to all the parents in making communication much similar:
A big thanks to Steven Deverson for all the time put in on keeping this up to date.
Results:
The team have stepped up a gear this year and are facing some hard fixtures against some excellent Bristol based clubs. The teams are performing well this year and have the following results:
A Team B Team
Played: 10 Played: 11
Won: 7 Won: 6
Drew: 0 Drew: 1
Lost: 3 Lost: 4
Goals Scored: 34 Goals Scored: 41
Goals Conceded: 13 Goals Conceded: 21
Goal Difference: + 21 Goal Difference: + 20
Banwell Under 10s
This is the boys’ last season playing mini football and the teams are developing the skills that will take them forward into the next adventure. Whilst the boys have not been on top form they have put in some spirited performances and have deserved more from some games.
The boys have continued to train hard at Wyvern and are learning new skills all the time. These boys play with a smile and it’s encouraging for the future and is what football is really all about.
Banwell Under 12s
Tony J has become more involved with helping run a very spirited team that can create great goals. Our own Peter Smiechel in Goalie Andrews gives us confidence (and earache). We create well from midfield and can finish as well.
Our downside this season was losing a few players and not being able to replace up to this point. We do concede a few too many goals but we are slowly learning to defend from the front. We can build on some promising results and climb the table if we can stick together and work as a team.
Stuart Hornigold (Under 14’s Athletic Manger)
The Athletic have started the season excellently, having won all 5 of their league games and are through to the 2nd round of the League Cup
League
Banwell Athletic 8-1 Burnbridge Wanderers
Banwell Athletic 6-1 Kewstoke Athletic
Banwell Athletic 4-3 Churchill Club 70
Banwell Athletic 8-1 Gordano VG
Banwell Athletic 12-1 Portishead
League Cup
Banwell Athletic 8 - 1 Axbridge Saxons
With 3 more games to go this year, Athletic will be looking to make it to Christmas with a 100% record in the league and to enter the New Year with a big push onto Promotion and to enjoy their best cup run ever
LEAGUE TABLE |

|
The team have scored 46 goals in 6 games so far, an average of nearly 8 per game !!!
We also have a close competition for the top goal scorer with both Leon Benjafield and Jordan Elliot on 15 goals each, with a very healthy 6 other players regularly scoring
Deano & Chalkie (Under 14’s Junior Managers & Larry Asst Manager)
As we approach the New Year we have currently progressed to Round 2 of the League Cup & Round 3 of the Lewin Cup. We have lost 3 games out of the 8 played and are currently joint 2nd in the league table.
All of this has been achieved with the hard work and determination of our boys who, at times, have had to play with the bare 11 & on occasions, through injury, with 10 players. They should be as proud of this as we are.
We welcomed Cameron Gray & Sam Coates to the team in October and they have settled in well and become an integral part of the team. We would like to thank Stuart Hornigold for allowing his son Jack to join the Juniors even though he continues to manage the Athletics team. Jack has worked hard and proved a valuable and quick member of the team. Defenders Harry Lewis, Callum Sully & Jake Betts are the envy of our opposite teams being a strong force at the back. Daz Newman, Adam Jones (AJ), Tyler Griffiths, Ash Pierson work well together in midfield and are formidable in their positions. Sean Royce has proved a valuable goalie for us and made some fantastic saves to keep us in matches we may have otherwise lost. Andy Vowles as always does his bit up front and has already scored his first hat-trick of the season. Well done lads and keep it up!!
We would like to thank the parents who have given us lots of help and advice as well as support on match days and especially Larry who collects the monies for us and helps us to motivate the team.
We are pleased that the team & parents are participating in a paintball team building and xmas event and would like to thank Wendy & Rob for organising this.
Looking forward already to next season we are looking for a sponsor for what should be our final kit as we would like to buy a kit that will last the final two years. If anyone knows of a company who would like to sponsor our kit please let us know we have a quote for approximately £500 - £550.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish our boys & parents a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
Words from Larry - I would like to say to the new management of Chalkie/Deano, & the juniors under 14's keep up the good work lads. A special thank you to Tina and Richard for all their hard work on this half of the season, and for the remaining season 2008.
Happy Birthday Adam on your birthday on the 12th.
Well done juniors for the win 18 November against Portishead Juniors!!
Brian Holden (Under 16’s Juniors Manager)
Here we are heading into December 2007 and continuing on from last year with a good run of results. Three additions during the closed season Jamie Gill, Jake Mawford and Louis Rouvaris have added that depth in squad quality we lacked last year.
We were unfortunate to lose one game this season when from 16 boys we scraped a bare 11 together and were suckered by 2 wonder goals. Football being football the return wonder goals we have scored leave me feeling good about a great set of boys (young men). By the time you read this article we are hoping to be into later stages of both the County Youth Shield and the League Cup and we currently hold top spot in the league by 4 points with a game in hand.
Together this year and next we are looking to set a good example of discipline, football and that of team bonding. We are the senior junior side and want to lead by example. Young people today are often accused of being yobs. Banwell under 16s are a great bunch of boys who in the main have remained loyal to our club and many could learn lessons on what being part of a team is all about.
We play on Sunday afternoons kick off @ 14:30 please look at the fixtures and come and watch some good football.
Banwell Seniors - 1st XI - Mid Season Report (Matt Duncan Manager) Report by Brad Diver
It is exactly halfway through the season and we find ourselves at the top of the table after 12 games - we have won 8, drew 1 and lost 3, along with progressing in the Divisional Cup after a 4-0 victory against Frome Collegians on the 17th.
Matt Duncan has done a fantastic job in the coaching and playing side of things and has the team playing some great football this season. We have recruited 7 or 8 new players this year and the squad is getting better all the time.
Anthony Harvey is proving a star signing in goal with solid performances every week, with Chris Price, Mark Sweeting, Mark Pennington, Tom Mullins, Roger Mitchell and Dan Grubb fighting for the 4 places in the back line, Captain Chris Bradley alongside Mr Consistent Ben Pugh-Jones have made a good solid base in the heart of midfield with young 16 year old Dayle Grubb proving his worth with some simply awesome displays alongside top scorer Marc Brooker who now has notched 12 goals in 11 games. Sam King and Andy Hayes have proved the formation works and have played well out wide respectively with Ben Ferris playing as lone striker the team are always creating chances as the results imply.
Personally it has been nice to take more of a back seat and help Matt in other areas where required and I'm really enjoying the season so far....watch this space as we could be looking at Promotion this season.
All supporters welcome please keep up to date with how the Seniors and Juniors are doing on the website which is starting to get very popular, again a big thank you to Jon Vinton for assisting me with this...
We are currently getting between 40-60 hits a day on the website, I will be looking in the future at offering local companies to sponsor the club for an annual fee to generate more revenue for the club, and look at advertising their company on the website when we are getting over 100 hits a day....
If anyone is interested in doing this for their own company or the company they work for please let Brad know on 07709 768843 or bdivesuk@hotmail.com
And finally
We hope you have enjoyed our December edition and the Committee would like to wish all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

We have at last managed to find a willing volunteer to take on the Club Welfare Officer so a big thanks goes to Sadie Carter for taking on this role.

Senior Presentation Night winners were - Players Player of the Year was Chris Bradley & Managers Player of the Year was Mark Sweeting well done to your both!
Summer Junior Tournament – again a big thank you to all the parents who helped out at this especially to those parents who found themselves putting in extra times due to lack of helpers on the Sunday rota. Overall a lucky weekend weather wise and although an immense amount of work for the committee members who spent their whole weekend helping the £3000 profit was worth it. A big thank you to Gary Smith who, even though finishing with the Club in May, still managed to come along and spend 2 days on the BBQ and Sue & Andrew Camper who gave up so much time before and on the day. Thanks should also go to Brian Holden, our new Junior Chairman, who put up with all the stress of mowing the pitches in the rain the weekend before, getting all the food and drinks before the event and running around like a headless chicken, when we ran out of food on the Saturday, to collect food from Macros at Cribbs Causeway for Sunday. Well done Brian!!
As you can see a lot of monies have been raised during May – August and the Committee have earmarked this monies to make essential maintenance to the Clubhouse such as repairing the Clubhouse roof, repainting the Clubhouse and tidying up the area around the Clubhouse. We will be looking to get quotes for this in the coming weeks. We would also like to provide half the cost towards all teams having Banwell JFC rain jackets and are looking to purchase some Banwell JFC beanie hats to sell at the beginning of the new season at a knock down price.
AGM
Our annual AGM took place on 10 June 2007. Martin Davies who has been the Club & Junior Chairman has stepped down and taken a back seat as a lowly Committee Member now but we would like to thank Martin for all his hard work. We are also hoping to retain Martin for the FA Charter sub Committee. Following Martin’s retirement Brian Holden was elected as Junior Chairman and Stuart Hornigold was elected Club Chairman. Matt Duncan was welcomed to the Club as the new 1st Team Manager and immediately stepped into the role of Club Treasurer. We would also like to welcome Dennis Elmer as our new Mini Coach - Dennis Elmer is starting a new concept with youngster’s football training.
Dennis, who lives in Banwell, and played football to a high non league standard is a keen qualified FA coach who believes that when a child has the talent you must let it grow naturally. Dennis will be taking groups of young children from the age of five and introducing them to a structured football program. He will have older boys from within our club involved in demonstrating and setting examples of dedication and ability. The hope is that we find the next great player before Manchester United or Chelsea.
Should you know of a young person 5 or 6 years of age who would benefit from this type of coaching then contact Dennis Elmer on 01934 822841 or Karan Andrews. Dennis is hoping to start these sessions from early August.
Dates for Your Diaries

Words from the Managers on the new season:
Brad Diver – Senior Team (1st) Assistant Manager
The Senior First XI have a number of friendlies lined up against Cossington, Bridgwater Reserves, Worlebury Spartans, Churchill & Weston United before the season gets under way on the 18th August.
Matt and myself are looking forward to this season with great anticipation, not only have we built a strong squad of players, we are also benefiting from the coaching experience of Matt and we are aiming for promotion this year...watch this space.
The Reserves unfortunately got relegated last year to Weston & District Division 4, after a remarkable turn around at the end of the season where they won their last 4 games only to lose their last fixture to miss out on staying up by just 1 point!! However this could well be a blessing in disguise as they should, with the players at both Matt and Si's, disposal be extremely strong and it looks promising for both sides gearing up to the current season.
The club would like to welcome back old players namely, Chris Price, Marc Brooker, Dan Grubb who all played junior football at Banwell and have all returned this year and I would like to wish both Matt Duncan and Simon Allan all the best for their respective seasons.
The Senior Tournament attracted 32 teams from all over the South West, luckily the weather held and we were able to continue as planned on the 21st July. The tournament is always well supported and it not only saw some excellent individual performances, but some extremely strong teams and it was Steves Super Stars & Armitage Shanks who made it through the long day to contest the final It was a thrilling encounter which ended 2-2 after full time, with no goals in extra time it was going to be decided on penalties, finally Steves Super Stars won through 2-1 and duly picked up their individual Champions trophies.
The club would like to thank Brad Diver for organising and running the tournament for the 3rd year, Mark & Debbie Reading for their hard work pre-tournament and on the BBQ which was very popular considering the weather, along with Mark Sweeting, Simon Allan, Matt Duncan, Mark Pennington, Marc Brooker for their refereeing throughout the day.
Finally... we also hit the £1000 profit barrier for the first time, so thanks to everybody who helped to make this a great day for the seniors
Deano & Chalkie (Under 14’s Junior Managers)
This will be a challenging year for us as we take on the role of Juniors Under 14’s Managers. We have a wealth of experience at playing football both at Junior and Senior level but welcome the opportunity to manage our own team. We are pleased that the majority of the team have decided to stick it out with us and look forward to the season ahead with anticipation. This year we enter the Lewin Cup where we will play teams from all over Somerset & Bristol. We would like to thank Larry for his continued support of us and the parents who have encouraged us in our first weeks as new Managers. Thank you must also go to Jason Royce who has given us some useful training kit. To the boys all we can say is do your best, enjoy the football & lets go for the treble!!
And finally
We hope you have enjoyed our August edition

At the moment we are organising Level 1 Coaching courses in May for all our football managers and hope to apply for FA Charter Status in July ready for the new season in September.
The position of Child Welfare Office is still needing to be filled in order for us to commit to FA Charter Status approval. We are desperate for a volunteer for this role. We have organised the Level 1 coaching course to be held at Riverside in May and the Child Protection and Best Practise Workshop will be held at the same time. If you would like to know more about this role please contact Martin Davies for details. Remember if this position is not filled we cannot apply for the FA Charter status and from next September all Clubs must have a Child Welfare Officer to compete in the Woodspring Junior League!!

The squad size of the under 7s is now 18 players. In the results above are some under 8s matches, also we are hoping to be at the following tournaments
Stuart James – Under 13’s (Juniors) Manager
Banwell Juniors under 13’s have edged their way to second place in the league with 5 games remaining. Having only lost 2 league games this season, (both to Burnham) and although third placed Kewstoke have 2 games in hand (both against Burnham) the runners up position is in our hands. The remaining games will be difficult but if we can field a full strength squad against last years champions Hutton and Kewstoke, Nailsea Utd, Portishead & Backwell we should achieve the right results.
In the last newsletter I wrote that Ollie Clements had joined Bristol Rovers and is doing very well, since then another of our players Ash Brewer is now training at the same club – we wish him luck. The above players plus Harry Lewis, Ricky Brewer and Andy Vowles are also playing for the Woodspring league representative and North Somerset teams
Last years Woodspring top goal-scorer Andy Vowles is on 14 goals so far this season, closely followed by Ash Brewer who has scored 12 goals in 5 games and Leon Benjafield who has scored 10. There have been some outstanding performances this year and The “Player of the Year” winner will be a very difficult decision as it has been much more of a team effort to achieve our position.
Hopefully the next time I write in the Newsletter we will have joined some of our other teams at the Woodspring Presentation night to collect our trophies!!
Brian Holden - Under 15’s Manager
Here we are with April upon us and we haven't played much competitive football for 3 months. How then can we explain the loss of 5 footballs, a broken arm and the good looking James Parker? Breaking his nose going into a tackle with his school mates.
On a forward looking note could I thank the parents who have given a little and watched the few games the boys have played.
Into spring we go Berrow on the horizon unfortunately game abandoned after 45 minutes due to hail, we will complete the season come rain, high water or hail, so please Mr Weatherman give us a break!
Brad Diver – Senior Team (1st) Manager
Banwell 1st Team have enjoyed further success and progression in this years season. They have returned with 4 wins from their last 8 games in the league and cup respectively. With 8 games left they are looking for another 4 wins from the remaining games to finish an indifferent season on a high.
Matt Duncan (Coach) has been instrumental in the recent revival of the team and I personally would like to thank him, on behalf of the team, for all his help, experience and guidance over the season so far, he has been a great addition to the club.
We were recently knocked out of the 1/4 final stage of the Somerset Cup losing 2-1 to Clutton in an exciting battle at the Riverside, unfortunately having to play the last 20 minutes with 10 men due to injuries, went 1-0 up only to lose late on 2-1.
A few personal mentions and praises for Mark Sweeting (1st Team Captain) who has been a towering leader at the back, Dave Harvey recently coming back to the club and putting a couple of strong performances together, Carl Aldous proving he is undoubtedly the best goalkeeper in the league with some outstanding saves and efforts (just need him to be more regular now) Chris Bradley again showing his ability and tireless work rate in which next season he should be available EVERY saturday which will make a big difference and finally Mark Pennington and Nick Markwell for some massive efforts, endless running and faultless displays showing great attitudes.
Looking ahead, we are already in the process of scouting for next year to continue improving our young side which hopefully next year will realise its massive potential and get the results we deserve.
We are currently training at Clifton College Sports Ground, Thursday nights at 9pm.
And finally
We hope you have enjoyed our April edition and please let us know if you can spare any time to help out at our up and coming events
